For the money I would buy a Marlin 45-70 as I never cared for the large lever and I work and live wear my rifle may safe my life.
Is there any way to put a smaller, regular style lever on one?

Interesting statement considering all of the reliability problems that Marlin has been having lately. Great example of "personal preference". I was all hot for a Marlin Guide Gun until I started doing research on them. Now that's on the back burner until they sort out their problems. I'll stick to my worked over Ranch Hand for an easy to carry back country weapon. If I need shtf reliability I'll grab my 870 tactical because there's a piece, along with my SIG 220, that has never, ever failed me. But that's the great thing about this world we live in, you have a choice.

I used to be a seismic surveyor and the 870 was my carry gun. I love the .44 but for dedicated grizzly protection it's not in the same league as the 45-70 or my personal favourite, the 12 gauge slug.
You would be surprised how close a hot loaded 44mag or 45 colt in a modern rifle comes to many factory 45-70 loads. Although when I go into areas that are chock full of grizzly, I pass over my 45 Colt Mdl94 Trapper for my 375 Ruger. Or a 14" 870 with Brenneke slugs, but the 375 is a better mouse trap, albeit a pound heavier.
i think the problem with the second one is that it works with replicas that have no sights. I think sights would damage the leather rings and make it hard to pull the rifle out. I am considering laroche leathers for a custom one because from what it sounds like thier prices are fair, and they do fantastic work ( I looked up a couple threads on them).
if you look up gunblast.com's review of the rifle, he uses a nice holster cheaper than the mcqueen one, but still around 250 US. I think it would be much cheaper to order from laroche leathers, especially if a few of us got together and got him to make duplicates of a custom design.
