UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Is there any way to put a smaller, regular style lever on one?
They look like a neat gun...

If you source one you could swap it out I guess not sure if it would require any fitting.....some people prefer the larger loops so you might be able to work out a trade.
Personally I think the best option is to get a metal worker to cut, reshape the big lever into a more streamlined medium loop and re weld and finish it.

For the money I would buy a Marlin 45-70 as I never cared for the large lever and I work and live wear my rifle may safe my life.

Interesting statement considering all of the reliability problems that Marlin has been having lately. Great example of "personal preference". I was all hot for a Marlin Guide Gun until I started doing research on them. Now that's on the back burner until they sort out their problems. I'll stick to my worked over Ranch Hand for an easy to carry back country weapon. If I need shtf reliability I'll grab my 870 tactical because there's a piece, along with my SIG 220, that has never, ever failed me. But that's the great thing about this world we live in, you have a choice.

Kanaima,

We had a scrappy introduction.

Great minds think alike ... in addition to my Ranch Hand, I have a Marine Magnum (with the handy $20 snap-on Truglo Glo-Dot front sight ... in green, naturally) and an exquisitely-tuned early-production 4" Model 66. The Rosssi Ranch Hand kinda "splits the difference" in more ways than one. :)

Happy New Year :)

I used to be a seismic surveyor and the 870 was my carry gun. I love the .44 but for dedicated grizzly protection it's not in the same league as the 45-70 or my personal favourite, the 12 gauge slug.

You would be surprised how close a hot loaded 44mag or 45 colt in a modern rifle comes to many factory 45-70 loads. Although when I go into areas that are chock full of grizzly, I pass over my 45 Colt Mdl94 Trapper for my 375 Ruger. Or a 14" 870 with Brenneke slugs, but the 375 is a better mouse trap, albeit a pound heavier.

I live on a remote ranch in SW Alberta, and it abuts the Forestry Reserve, and we have beaucoup bears (of both species) plus moose and cougars and wolves and I once saw a wolverine. About seven or eight years ago I bought about a half-dozen 5-packs of Brenneke Black Magic slugs from Gander Valley ... and still have most of them. Can you say "600 g of solid swaged lead in the shape of an oil drum?"

Some things you just gotta ration ... especially in Canada. :)

That looks awesome...! Congrats.

Any better pics of the whole gun, light-colored background maybe ?

I was talking to the distributer in Halifax and he is getting some in a couple weeks time.
I got one coming, now some questions.
I am getting some parts from Steve's Gunz, like the tool kit, DIY action job kit, green front fiber optic sight, and low flat top rear sight.
Do I need the firing pin, it it better and does the original one break.
Is there anything else I should get, I want this thing to work great.

Not much activity because I think just about everything that could be asked or discussed, has been. I don't recall firing pins being an issue with these rifles. Do a search on this thread to confirm.

Rossi Ranch Hand Holsters

i think the problem with the second one is that it works with replicas that have no sights. I think sights would damage the leather rings and make it hard to pull the rifle out. I am considering laroche leathers for a custom one because from what it sounds like thier prices are fair, and they do fantastic work ( I looked up a couple threads on them).

if you look up gunblast.com's review of the rifle, he uses a nice holster cheaper than the mcqueen one, but still around 250 US. I think it would be much cheaper to order from laroche leathers, especially if a few of us got together and got him to make duplicates of a custom design.

Hey Driller, Good idea on the bulk order of the holsters. I would be interested in joining the crew of potential purchasers, depending on the price of course, so please keep me posted if you decide to contact laroche leathers. I just put my name in for one of the Rossis at Can Tire. I think they are about $500.

Freedome Ventures in Halifax is the importer for rossi, I was talking to them, but they just sell to dealers, they advertise here.
