S&W M&P Compact

Thanks for the pics. I was waiting for someone to post one before I ordered one to see what it looked like with the aftermarket barrel. Too bad about the barrel, that really sucks to have to wait for a new barrel to come in on a new gun. I wonder how it got past their QC process (if they have one).

Yes, I have wondered about that QC process at Storm Lake myself. Also too bad that Questar didn't at least try cycling a dummy round through the gun, but that wouldn't have made the replacement form storm lake any quicker I guess.

On the positive side, a full size M&P .40 barrel fits perfectly, so I was able to try it out and it was a lot of fun to shoot. Feels a little snappier than the full size M&P, as expected with less frame to absorb the recoil. But not as much as a sub-compact Glock from what I remember when I used to have one.

Still no ETA from Questar. They just said that Storm Lake is working on it as fast as they can. Which is good to know, but would be nice to have an idea when.

They really need to import the 45 mid size and 45 compact - the factory barrel is 2mm too short for Canada. 2 lousy mm!

whoa...a full size barrel fits? This would have been much cheaper than storm lake barrels.

Yep, just slightly longer. 4.25" vs the 4.17" (106mm). Functions perfectly.

Weirdness. I emailed S&W years ago when the compact came out and they told me it wasn't interchangeable. Wonder what the deal is....Would probably be cheaper to find a used barrel or new and get irunguns to get some compacts. voila. Could flip the unused compact barrel in the us to get some money back too.

I personally want a pro with the long slide but anyone wanting a compact might find my suggestion cheaper. Im going to research to see if any americans have tried this and what they say.

I found a thread which explains it quite well. Click Here. The end of the barrel (breach) is slightly larger diameter to act as a built in bushing and with the full size barrel it would not be present at the end of the compact size slide. It results in the barrel pointing very slightly lower than what the intended barrel would but may not be of any significant difference in accuracy. Bottom line. It works. Its cheaper.

Ya, I read that same article. Didn't notice it shooting low, probably not an issue at shorter distances though.. Once I get the 106mm .40c storm lake barrel replaced, I'll take them both to the range and see if there is any perceivable difference.

I doubt it will be of any real significance. If it shoots slightly low I am sure you could adjust your sights or aim. Full size barrels are pretty inexpensive and there is a market for the compact barrels. I think the swap could be done at a lower rate that could be passed on to the consumer. Anyways, I look forward to an accuracy test between the two barrels but I expect the SL barrel to shoot better because it is supposed to be higher quality and the fit is right.

Because of our laws, Canadians are obsessed with owning compacts. Just my opinion but having to put an extended barrel onto it defeats the purpose because it's not really a compact any more. (Like putting lipstick on a pig LOL)

I have the Glock G19 which isn't too bad because it's just a few mm. Sub compacts, now that's a different story.

That's what I like about the M&P 45 Mid and Compact - they use the same barrel and slide with different grip frames and it's just 2.5mm too short.

It sounds like you don't understand the concept behind compacts, or sub-compacts.
Our laws make it more expensive to own, but that isn't what made me want one...
