7mm mag or .300 win mag

I should also point something else out - I am not a fan of factory ammo as I reload, but 7mm RM choices are, imo, especially weak. They have really been loaded down since the Big 7 was introduced. According to Jack O'Connor, who tested it before I was born, Remington's 175gr ammo clocked right around the claimed 3050fps in a 700 BDL. The 150gr loads were similarly right around the claimed velocity of, iirc 3200fps. Compare that to contemporary loads.

When chronographs were very expensive (up until recently) and pressure measuring equipment similarly expensive, most manufacturers both exaggerated muzzle velocities and often loaded ammo hot.
The only exception to this are the military cartridges which must be loaded to strict specifications (30-06, 7mm Mauser and 8mm Mauser never had any performance issues).

That being said Hornady 7mm Rem Mag 154gr Interbond Superformance is loaded at 3100fps from a 24" barrel!
Ever more interesting, Nolser's 168gr Accubond Long Range (around 0.600 G1 BC) at 2880fps at more than 60$ a box.

For the same amount of recoil, 7RM offers better ballistics.

For putting more lead on target, 300WM cause you can load up with much heavier slugs. The further you go, the more important this becomes

Both are equally accurate IF you can drive the recoil well.

For 500yds and in, I will just use my 7-08 or 30-06

looks like the .7mm is the winner. i am mostly for target shooting so the recoil factor is a big one. but it looks like there will be no problem with black bear or even moose at 500m? the thing i like about the 300 like they said lots of bullet selection. i think the bullet tho might be abit big on the 300 for something small like a coyote? but the 7mm past 500 should get the job done?

biggest rifle i have right now is a .308 Edge with a leupold mk4 3-10X. i have been looking at the remington 700 sps dm in 7mm and its under 600 at a store were i live.i think that might be what i go with.

Keep in mind that he chronographed many other cartridges too, and it is easy to compare results. So, for example, if back in the day a 7mm RM with 150gr bullets chronographed at ~75 fps faster than a .270 with 130gr bullets, and today it chronographs ~75fps lower, then you can draw some conclusions from those results.

With plain old Wal-mart grey box Winchester the 180 gr .300WM beats the 175gr 7mm mag all day. At 500 yards the 7mm mag drops 53.6 inches vs the .300WM 48.8 inches. It is also now going over 100fps slower with 200ftlbs less energy.

What were the results the last time you tested those two loads at 500 yards? Do you think a 200ft-lb difference makes any practical difference on game?

Good lord.... get a 50 BMG then as it has more ft-lbs than both, and more, well, everything at long distance.... Just pick one you like, and hunt and kill game at whatever distance you are capable of. They both will do the job nicely.

Recoil is relative to gun weight and fit. Take a tikka t3 vs my zastava which is 7.6 pounds plus my hawk scope which is almost 2 pounds and you can see that t3 will recoil alot more. If you want the 300 get a heavier gun. I have a 6.5x55 and 300. If you want a 30 cal gun for the big stuff that is the gun to buy. If you plan to hunt deer just use a 308. If you want the big bear, moose gun get a 300.

I would think if 500 yards is in the equation, the 8mm Remington Mag and the 338 Winchester Mag would be the go to cartridges. I lean towards the 8mm but not as easily found any more.

I prefer the 7mm, as I'm not a fan of recoil. But all things considered. How many have ever taken game at a truthful 500 yards? Some absolutely. Most no. If there is one thing I have learned over my years of hunting, is lots of hunters, aren't exactly the best range estimaters. Shoot what works best for you. As many stated, the game your firing at won't really notice the diff. Just my 2 cents.

Dave.

I would decide which to get based upon what I might use it for, if you might want to use lighter bullets for smaller game or speed, get the 7mm, if might want to use it on larger or more dangerous game and want heavier bullets, get the 300. Other than that, just buy a rifle you like that fits you, in the first caliber that comes along!

I have two 7mm-08's for the kids to use.

I am always interested in the perspective that the 7mm-08 is a "kids" or "ladies" gun...

That would mean I am either a huge, "260 pound" kid...Or; a "butt-ugly" woman!

For the thread discussion... if something ever did possess me to abandon my puny .308 case family of cartridges... I would go with the STW family via the .308 NM, before ever going with the Rem/Win mags...

I guess that makes two of us, maybe even more so in my case since mine is a SS model 7....
