7mm mag or .300 win mag

I am always interested in the perspective that the 7mm-08 is a "kids" or "ladies" gun...

That would mean I am either a huge, "260 pound" kid...Or; a "butt-ugly" woman!

For the thread discussion... if something ever did possess me to abandon my puny .308 case family of cartridges... I would go with the STW family via the .308 NM, before ever going with the Rem/Win mags...

Im haveing trouble connecting those dots; how do you get to the STW by way of the Norma Mag?

I would pick the 300 Win Mag. Excellent knock down power and generally very accurate if you can handle the sharp recoil. I have always loved the 7mm Rem Mag, but never owned one....yet!

The STW's were based off the 8mm rem mag, I am not sure what you mean by "via the 308 Norma Mag".

The progression was not literal, as in modifying a particular case... What I was saying is, that if I leave the .308 Win family... it would be to the .308 NM... after which, should I move on, it would be to the STW group... this is all moot, because I am perfectly happy with the performance of my .243, .260, 7mm-08 and .308 Wins... also have K-Hornet and .223 on the low end and Whelen/.45/70 Gov on the high end, plus a whole pile of .30/30's (including singles for spire point shooting) and single and bolt 7.62X39's (no SKS's) for fun... sure there are dozens of better calibers, but there is always going to be a "better" caliber, which will be improved, which will be improved again etc... etc... I will stick with the one case and mess around with loads, thats good enough for me... and I can hunt anything that I am inclined to with this little group, and they are cheap to feed and pleasant to shoot.

7MM REM MAG. higher b.c and sectional density For simailar bullet weights, less recoil, will do anything a 300 win mag will do at 500 yards

I wonder what the 7mm RM would be like with 220 grain pills, since it is so superior to the 300, lol. As I stated before, it all depends on what you intend to do with the rifle, at what distance, with what bullet you need or want.

How dead do you want the paper target/gong/pumpkin to be? How much energy do you want dumped into the hill behind the deer? Are you fond of Texas heart shots? Is your hearing valuable to you?

My next step up from 7mm RM 160gr will be .338 Lapua (it will be a while).

i already decided to go with the 7mm. thanks for the help. i am going to buy the remington SPS DM.

the gun center were i shop has the savage .338 lapua for $1395 and with seller and bellot ammo its $31 for 10 at ammo source. not a bad option but still to much for me at this time.

For the last 20 years we all pretty much had 7mm RM, with the 30 cal rule in the Yukon, many more 30-06, and 300 WM have been sold. Right now about 50/50

I'd have to say the same as everyone esle I have a small arsenal of 40 +
And always fall back to the 7 mm mag
And it has taken a lot of animals out at the 600 yard
We are talking elk and they all dropped

I've had both and like both. I currently have a 300 Win Mag but that's because I have a 7mm-08 Rem. I will say that the recoil is noticeably less with the 7mm Rem Mag vs the 300 Win Mag! These kind of debates can be spun in favor of either cartridge depending what bullets, rifles etc are chosen and how you crunch the numbers. These cartridges are too close to see any real world difference, at least in my opinion. It's not like were comparing a 25-06 to a 338 Win Mag. I think a case can be made for either and ultimately you picked the 7mm. Good choice.
