ORA's CQB Matches - Getting ready...

If "you" can manage working with a flap do it. I've used mag pouches, shingles and tension fit. They all have advantages and draw backs, play with them each to figure out what works for you.

I've run the 5.11 pouches and they worked fine for me, no effect on my reloads or movement, i prefer the Blue Force Gear Helium Whisper personally. Do you intend to run a battle belt, a rig or a mixed setup?

This makes a difference, if your using belt you'll want something like FastMags (tensioner with open top) or Tacos for the belt. If you're running a rig (vest, plate carrier or chest rig) you mite want Ten Speed or Tacos if your not storing your stuff for long times and want quick access. If you want to ensure they don't fall out while doing things like supine or urban prone or up and downs looking for cover then something like the 5.11 or BFG Helium works great and you can tuck the flaps back for competitions where you are only standing. The other option for rigs or belts is good old shingles. Which really won't save you any weight, commonly won't fit PMAGs or other non-milspec metal mags but work well to retain and access mags so you can feed ammo forward.

Take a look at One Shot Tactical, DS Tactical, RAMPART International or Sheepdog Tactical for pricing.

The down sides to the Serpa on a leg rig are Serpa are these:

1) Other shooting sports such as IDPA and IPSC don't allow a leg rig

the serpa can be easily separated from the drop leg...so the holster itself can still be used for other sports. You will need the belt loop though

True, I actually prefer to use my SERPA CQ with the paddle and keep it on my hip or belt. I find it easier to access while sitting or in a vehicle.

As an option here's one of my rigs, I'll be upgrading the belt to a HSGI or BFG by the end of the year and picking up some new TACOs or FastMags. I'm also looking at a G Code or Raven Concealment Kydex holster once money allows.

Nice set up! I am doing similar thing.

I am waiting for the newest 5.11 plate carrier, and I will be running it with 5.11 mag pouches, 5.11 drop leg holster with the 5.11 thumbdrive holster. I am thinking to get another leg rig to attach Tacos on my other leg.

Have you thought about a battle belt instead of two drop leg rigs. I had the same thing before and I found it awkward to move around. I was able to fit the same amount of kit on my battle belt and was more mobile.

Additionally I'm running a set of Wendy's Practice plate in my plate carrier to keep everything where it's supposed to be.

I'll say it again, don't put stuff on your legs. The leg holster is bad enough as its never in the right position and very much a PITA for the prone string, which usually ends up with it getting pushed around to the front of the legs where it's pretty much useless. This goes double for leg pouches. You don't need that many mags for CQB and good luck trying to reload from the leg on the move and shoot match. The rig pictured above us is good as any I've seen.
I shot the provincials last year with just a belt rig and that was almost perfect. I added a chest rig just to move some pouches forward ad give my self a bit more real estate to have an accessory pouch to throw some spare ammo, CoF sheets, pens etc. but I can easily run without it.

Thanks, I learned the hardware years ago to get things off my legs and to keep my rig light. The belt is really the way to go for practical shooting or competition if you want to carry that much or even down load and just use the belt. One of the things a friend got me doing is as well is 1 pouch, 1 mag. Keeps me from dropping mags and is easier to take a prone position because everything isn't cutting into me.

You know what....you guys are right. I'm going to go with belt rig, and just use drop leg holster on one side with option to mount it on the chest.

Which BFG or HSGI belt rig you guys recommend?

Find a place to try them out, if your close to One Shot Tactical they have both, if not there are a few of the other retailers listed above that have them or similar. The big difference in the two is price, the HSGI runs just under the $100.00 CDN mark where the Blue Force Gear is just under $200.00 CDN.

Condor makes one as well and it costs less, or if you find you really do like it as a set up places like SOE Gear, and Ares Gear, make custom ones.

Are you around the Freddy area? I wouldn't mind a kick in the ass to the right direction / shooting group for some of the CQB stuff if you're willing.

That's one thing I'm going to change on my chest rig, I put two double mag pouches which gives lots of extra plus it's handy to grab those four for the prone stage, but most of the time it's just too bulky, I'm going to strip it down to two singles (maybe three) to get it to lay flatter. I went with a split front rig which is nice because in a normal prone I can just undo it and get right on the ground.

I was looking at reviews video on youtube on BFG SOC-C padded belt & HSGI padded belt. In term of functionality, the only difference between the two is SOC-C belt is adjustable to your waist, and HSGI you have to get the exact size. Are there any other differences that I missed to justify that extra $$$ other than the brand name?

Actually I'm running three Helium Whisper doubles but I only put a single mag in them, I find they elastic is tight enough to keep them firmly in place. I'm also running the Ten Speed side panels for extra space if I really need it. Even the 5.11 pouches on my belt are the double stacks I fold with the flaps in and they hold a single mag perfectly.

When you start looking at them for fine detail yes

HSGI - has a reversed neoprene interior it has three rows of MOLLE webbing and three access points for duty gear or drop leg ace assemblies. Depending on which package you may need to buy a duty belt. I'm pretty sure it's 1000 D Corudra. Making it stif and heavy as well as the external web tape used to strengthen the seams.

BFG - has an ergonomic shape with additional padding in the rear for comfort. It has two rows of MOLLE webbing and because of the velcro along the lower fold/seam you can place any number of hanging assemblies you want, in addition the SOC-C if a full package, suspenders, padded belt, and duty belt. Like most BFG kit is made of 500 D Cordura and has internal seams to reduce wear on the kit and the wearer.

If I had to choose a drop leg unit, I would prefer the 6004 or 6005 Safariland with the SINGLE strap shroud or cut down your double strap unit into a single (lower) strap setup and have it seated nice and high off your rigger or instructor belt.

Now back to the drop leg, I do have them and wear them occasionally, but I prefer my holster on my vest because I'm worried about 'fishing' for my pistol at the bottom of the blue shztter at Langemark Range, CFB Borden. The drop leg rigs are a PITA for those moments when Nature Calls and you have to drop a deuce. The last thing you need is me yelling, "Desert Eager, number ONE!"

Seems to be a popular cheer at CQB events in Ontario!

Hey, my Serpa should be here soon, and yes we don't bother loading the chamber until after the pistol is drawn so I think my #### won't get shot off.

Cheers,
Barney

Hey Hungry if your going to be at match 1 this weekend I need you on my relay as my safety guy that way you can yell "Desert Eager, number One" if you get hit by any .50AE brass!!! and it will be in a drop leg rig as well.

My double pouches are TT, I just cranked the elastic down and they are better. Much flatter with only one mag each.
