So I gotta ask ... Why so many 1911s??

It's not just the 1911, any good design is like this, it may just be harder to spot. There are really 4 main types of handguns on the market: S&W cartridge revolver (all modern revolvers), 1911, Browning Hi-Power (CZ, Tanfoglio, Baby Eagle) and Glock (all polymers, esp striker fired - I guess there might have been other plastic guns first but it wasn't until the Glock became a hit that everyone had to have a version).

Shoot a genuine quality 1911, you'll soon find out why they're so good. Only had my PAL for 2 years, but my best results have come from our club 9mm, a STI Spartan 1911 in 9mm. Look it up, you'd be hard pressed to find a better 1911 for the price. This thing makes me look like I know how to shoot! Good luck and be safe.

So you a Para hater and im a norc hater cause they cheaply made, my Para 1911 has gone bang everytime in the last 900 rounds in 2 months, no issues and well built, i looked at a Sig 1911 and it wasnt that much a difference to pay 1300 when my para was 729

The difference between a norc and a para is that a norc is priced according to how cheaply its made .. And a para .. Well 729 speaks for itself.

I've never had a round not go bang in my 300 dollar norincos and really I basically got a 1911 a tokarev and 1000 rounds of 45 auto for the price of your para which shoots no better than my norinco

True, there are only a few base designs, and I think Browning Hi Power is superior to the 1911. Just look at all the variations that have spawned from that action. Both Hi Power and 1911 actions are reliable and proven but simplicity of the 1911 contributes even more to its reliability and customisability.

I'm curious where H&K and Sigs 226 born from. Grand Power K100 with rotating barrels too.

For all the other reasons listed here. And still used by professionals. In the end, you gotta be able to hit with it.

Why so many...? Primarily because people keep buying them. Is there any brand of 1911 clone that doesn't sell like hotcakes?

I think the 1911 is obsolete....give me a S&W M&P45 any old day, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to shoot or worthwhile having. People are enthusiastic about all kinds of things...so whatever floats yer boat.

hey TDC
put your stick away there Polymer Pete and move along nothing for you to see here

You're right. Just More blind following of a very outdated and overrated platform by many untrained enthusiasts more concerned with Bs like "fit" and "looks" than practical design features.

To address some other comments. The controls are easy to manipulate if you're right handed. Manual safeties are often left on under stress and not needed with the grip/drop safety already incorporated.

1911 don't "shoot well". Its the shooter that makes the shot not the gun. The guns inherent accuracy/performance does not change from person to person. And fit is an excuse. The vast majority of people with proper technique and instruction can properly run a double stack gun with ease.

If you think an over sized over weight pistol that is not ambi friendly with a poor capacity and needs tuning to run is a solid gun then fill your boots. They're a classic and they are aesthetically pleasing.

To each their own.
Follow your bliss.
I shoot 1911,s and I love Colts.
This is my bowling gun.
I bought it specifically for that purpose.
You can see the pins trembling when they see the 45acp coming out.

Here's a Colt in 9mm.
I use it for pins too,but they don,t tremble as much when I pull this one out.

I have many 1911's. This is my favorite.

Solid, accurate, built like a tank

I thoroughly enjoy the platform and have 1911's in .45ACP, 38 super, and 10mm. I really want one in 9mm and one in 357 magnum

So I am patiently awaiting the arrival of my RPAL and while I wait I'm doing a little research to figure what I think I would like to buy and I can't believe how many 1911s are out there! I know the patents were generously sold off by Mr. Browning and thus anyone can produce them, but why are they so popular?

They are awesome. Don't think, just do it.

;)

Well... Seeing as how CanadaAmmo has a fricking UNREAL deal on 1000 rounds of 45Auto & a 1911 pistol... I do believe CanadaAmmo is largely to blame for "Why there are so many 1911's"...

Cheers

JOHN MOSSES BROWNING IS A GENIUS .industry leader ...and was a revolution to semi auto handguns .
ya there were other designs before his, but nothing like 1911,and the high power .. revolutionary .

"Of course the 1911 is an outdated design. It came from an era when weapons were designed to win fights, not to avoid product liability lawsuits. It came from an era where it was the norm to learn how your weapon operated and to practice that operation until it became second nature, not to design the piece to the lowest common denominator. It came from an era in which our country tried to supply its fighting men with the best tools possible, unlike today, when our fighting men and women are issued hardware that was adopted because of international deal-making or the fact that the factory is in some well-connected congressman's distract. Yes, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the 1911 IS an outdated design... and that's exactly what I love about it."

I feel dumber for even reading that. I suppose Mr Benson would like to bring back the P51 mustang, Sherman tank and the M1 Garand because they were also made in the above era. His political references are interesting since his view point is about as political as you possible can get. All fluff, chest pounding and emotion without any real rational or analytical thought.

And that is how 1911 fans think, completely void of rational logical thought. Emotionally vested ignorance in an inanimate object.
