Surprises on CanadaAmmo.ca

Funny how nothing in that article indicates any study of, or expertise in, steel jackets causing increased wear. Yet folks assume it does.
what is your experience with it? I am curious because I am thinking about buying/shooting it but will pay more for a copper jacketed bullet if wear is increased.

If it was a cheap rifle where maintaining it's accuracy was not as much of a concern I wouldn't hesitate to put the cheapest stuff I can find down the pipe for plinking.

Insomnia last night and I noticed it. Then did the typical CanadaAmmo internal dilemma.

Ok ordered a crate. Thats a lot of ammo.
Wait, maybe i should order another.
No one's enough.
Well where one is good, two is better.
No you don't need another crate.
Who said anything about need.
But maybe I should get a crate of 5.56 from somewhere.
Just go to sleep and think about it tomorrow.

Do other hobbyist forums sound this much like a support group for some intense, pathological behavior?

I do this too....

This is super hard to pass up- can anyone tell me the quality of this ammo as far as accuracy? I dont consider 308 a close range plinking round for me its too expensive(22lr!)- not expecting 1 MOA but will these make it out to 300 yards without self-destructing/10" groups?

I have an 8x8 and a 12x12 steel that I like to set up at range just wondering if these would be good enough to hit those at medium ranges. wouldnt even consider it but I cant even reload for $400/1000....

You would have to be a g0d d@mmed fool to think the a steel jacket wouldn't increase wear. That wouldn't stop me from shooting it but of course it will increase wear.

I suspect that by the time you wear your barrel out, you will have both gotten your monies worth out of a $400 rifle, and save enough on ammo to buy many more rifles. Often you can find used barrels for very cheap for the m305. Screw it on and check headspace.

I have never fired enough rds in any single gun to wear one out with any type of jacket. My only comment is that the Germans, Americans, etc have been using steel jackets for ages and if it wore out barrels much faster I doubt they would. Especially given how hard they work to prevent wear in MG barrels (throats in particular, different issue there).

They only gun I have worn out if one of the test tavors after approx 20k rds it is now keyholing badly

If you want to be sure of a long life, NitroCarburize the barrel.

I am not really concern about my m14 barrel, but my rfb chrome line barrel is another story. Would it be hard on my chrome line?

Does anyone think this would run well in a RA xcr-m , or should I just stick to the premium stuff ? (Hornady, nosler ,etc) I only ask because that sounds like a really good deal , but would hate to damage a 2800 $ rifle because I decided to cheap out on ammo . Had some problems with lead tipped federal & have since run only polymer tip high-end ammo.
Any thoughts ?

Did you get your RFB's barrel chromed? Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the RFB doesn't come with a chrome lined barrel stock.

Just ordered a case. Thanks for the heads-up. I had it added to "My Wishlist" but never received an email that it was back in stock. Glad I didn't miss out this time around as I was down to my last 100 rounds.

^probably a lot cheaper to replace the barrel by the time the cheap stuff wears it out vs. premium stuff.

I run the cheap MFS/Norc 7.62x39 through XCR-L, cheaper to replace barrel (5-600 bucks on EE) than run premium ammo.
