possibly a stupid question but it needs to be asked.... have you thoroughly cleaned and oiled it yet?

I finally fired mine today and I have had it for a few weeks.. I know I know..

It's fun, a hell of a cannon. Is the Norinco ammo a little warm? casings were everywhere. I also took my Glock 22 and my CZ Shadow. Shooting casually and semi quickly, I'm quite an impressive shot with the CZ (apple sized group of 3 mags), mediocre with the Glock and minute of page at 10-12 yards with the 1911.

The target boards were new however and the 5 mags of .45 blew the plywood to ####. That part was impressive. I've shot a Glock 21 a few times but I think I finally got why people like .45's.

On mag 2 or 3, from the screw up on one grip and from the screw down on the other completely let go. I found most of the pieces.

Overall though, it's pretty fun. I'll change out the internals because the thumb safety is a little wonky, but you get what you pay for. Cheap fun.
 
Yeah, I would say that the Norinco 45 seems like its a bit of a hot load. Oddly enough, I actually had dented casings the first range trip time as all the casings were impacted a wooden partition at the range. The second range trip I went on to a different range which had no partitions and not a single casing was dented or deformed in any way however the casings were 3-4 bays down from where I was!

Mine runs flawlessly, but I will definitely tinker with it. The one I got from ARMCO has spoiled me. The norc will shoot like your CZ with not much fiddling.

Now to research the various refinishing kits/services available (Norrell finish, Cobra coat, Cera coat, Dura coat, Arma coat, the mind boggles). I'll likely look for a DIY solution since I don't want to sink a lot of money. However, getting a couple of hundred rounds through each one is top of the list before anything else.

I picked up some lapping compound today. I'll work on the slide action on both pistols before any range action to smooth things out a bit.

I was considering lapping the slide/frame fit as well, until it started to loosen up a bit on its own due to repeated cycling and disassembly - LOL! I still may, though, and

Please let me know what you discover on finishes - so far I'm leaning heavily towards a cerakote oven cure kit from Brownell's, but haven't made the plunge yet.

Yeah, the ammo's hot. I'm accustomed to target loads and SWC bullets, light springs, and brass landing essentially beside me. This stuff was hitting the rafters, bouncing off the 20x20 concrete pad into the grass, sometimes bouncing off my hat. If you REALLY want to do a "tune up" on the gun get ready for a bunch of time and patient work. Kuhnhausen's shop manuals give a really good step-by-step guide to accurizing a .45... If you can find one.

As noted before, have you de-greased the thing? Simple way is to field strip, remove grips and blast everything with a can of brake clean. Lube with a good CLP ,reassemble and rack the slide numerous times without the mag in place. Mine was done this way and everything works pretty good.

FINALLY got here yesterday.

This gun is much better looking than I expected, but I did have a bit of a battle reinstalling the mainspring housing retaining pin. I laughed, I shouted, I bled, but it's all degreased and oiled now.
 
I have to clean mine up yet, but it looks to be a nice one. The thing I noticed so far is that the grip safety is very loose and just rattles around. How can I fix this so there is some spring pressure on the safety. I am going to take it apart and clean it tomorrow.

I managed to get the Wilson drop in beavertail/grip safety installed using a skeletonized hammer a friend had laying around. These 2 parts were BOTH total drop in's... no fitting or modification necessary. Not sure what brand the hammer is, but it looks cool. Also swapped the extended mag release from my SR-1911, put on a set of Hogue wrap around grips and the trigger from dlask. I do intend to order another extended slide release for this gun. But thats it. It works flawlessly and looks like a gun you wouldnt be afraid to knock around.

Boy, you sure cleaned her up nice and purdy! I'm still feeling like a complete prick for not getting one. If I'd known since the beginning the deal would be around this long, I'd have saved my pennies since day one. FRAK!

I am a total 1911 noob, mine does the same thing and I have no idea if it's normal or what to do about it.

Just remove the hammer spring housing and dismantle the grip safety then remove the sear spring - you will see the third leaf on the right applies pressure to the grip safety. Simply bend it outwards to increase the pressure on the grip safety and reinstall, a simple 5 minute fix.

Lots of youtube videos out there to show you how to correctly dismantle a 1911.

And, just be careful not to put the "noob scratch" on the frame [in the are under the slide stop - above the mag release button] when you reassemble it..... ;)

The Logman mod is the first thing I do to the slide stop on my 1911's. Really helps to hold the slide stop in the right position so I can just push it in when the slide is lined up.
 
Mine arrived, over the fall I will reshape the flaws, straighten and soften the lines, swap out some parts and parkerize...should be fun projects.
