223 load

you have a 1-9" twist why bother with the little 50 grainers. I have a 1-9" twist in my savage model 12 and it loves the 70gr bergers. Way better BC and still going 2900 +fps. 1" groups or less at a 200 yards. with 24gr's of varget

I shot around 2k of the 53gr vmax so far with this load. 25.7gr of varget. winchester, rp, hornady brass, cci small rifle primer, and col of 2.244". 5 shot groups .5 -.7 in my rifle at 100. Was shooting them out to 340 yards on sunday in 30km winds and was getting 4 to 5 inch 50 shot group. Speed I get is 3020fps. My rifle is also a 1:9 twist.

thats 53 grainers :p

Im just going to start with them as my first reloading experience. :)

Im sure Im going to get the bug from doing this, so Im sure theres going to be a bunch of loads being made om my little bench.

I have a large stash of the 53gr on the bench right now still. I shoot a few others but mainly the 53's. Lots of gophers have blowed up from them and coyotes fall fairly easy as well.

Are you responding to me? If so, my rifle doesn't seem to shoot the heavy bullets very well. Why, I don't know, I'll have to spend some time on a couple loads in the near future. But it really likes the 50-60gr range.

I sighted in using the 55 gr V-Max load and I can switch to any of the before posted loads and still get an almost same POI. It's very accurate on Gophers out to 300 yards.

Well I have to start somewhere and I like the sounds of the 53's too. :)

I mainly making this round for winter yotes for the season and I use to buy store bought 50grainers that worked good for last year coyotes. So Im kind of staying around the grainers that Im use to using. I know down the road somewhere Ill be playing around with abunch of different rounds

Pretty sure you wont be disappointed with the 53's. They have a pretty good bc for the weight as well.

I'm using a Savage 25 LWV with a 1-9 twist and I've been shooting 5 shot groups under a quarter and some under a dime using Accurate 2015 22grns...with Win small rifle primers once used brass and Hornady 60 grn Vmax bullets...Very happy with the powder and bullets. Oh yeah, OAL is 2.260...At a hundred yards.

Your mileage may vary, but I've got a Stevens 200 in .223 as well and I've found it will shoot from 40gr to 50gr bullets with respectable accuracy, but it really seems to sing with the 55gr-60 gr pills. Here are some loads that I've worked out in my rifle, I found none were "hot" but I believe some are near published max, so use caution. All are around 2.25" COL.

40 gr V-max - CCI 450, win brass, 27.5gr varget - approx 1", wind was gusting
52 gr sierra MK - CCI 450, fed brass, 26.0 gr varget - 1.5", early load (conservative), I think the node is probably closer to 27.0gr
55 gr berger target - CCI 450, win brass, 27.0gr varget - 4 shots in to one slightly ragged hole
60 gr nosler partition - CCI450, rem brass, 26.5gr varget (sub 0.5")
62 gr berger - CCI450, rem brass, 26.6gr varget (approx 0.75")
65 gr sierra GK - WSR, fed brass, 26.0gr varget 1" (another sub 1" node possible at 25.6gr)

As a side note, N140 is a slower powder but in a pinch it seemed to be a fair substitute for Varget, the charges for the most accurate loads seem to be about 0.5gr lighter though.

Someone was asking earlier about the difference between BR4 and CCI400 primers, and from what I've read the benchrest primers come from earlier in the production run when tolerances may be a bit tighter, so presumably they are more uniform than those that come later. Other than that, they have the same cup, the same dose of the same priming compound, etc.

Thanks Chinook for the load data.

Im sure Ill be trying out a few different loads down the road. :)

Did pick up some 53 grainers today, also with a 1000 CCI 450's

Since I have a few of you guys here helping me out I wanna ask you guys another question.

I was checking out a thread here not too long ago about fl dies and ns dies. What kind do you guys like to use?

This is the last thing I need now to start reloading

I full length size everytime. I set mine to bump the shoulder back slightly (~.003") Much of my brass lasts for 10 reloads or more with the load I posted above. I do have a neck sizing die coming from redding it will be the first time I have tried something like that. Not sure how it will go.

Cool thanks for responding.

10 reloads sounds like good case life to me. How many times do you trim them in that life span. I hope you dont mind me picking your brain on a few things. :)

I kind of know a local guy that said he would help me out with this. I think Ill have to give him a pm here soon.

I trim every time. I like them to be all the same length. Some say as long as they are shorter then 1.760 you are good but I like all mine to be 1.753".
