Talking my girlfriend out of a Mossberg and into an 870 . . .

To put it another way, tellin your gf that the mossberg she wants isn't the 870 she should buy, is like telling TV Press Pass the Tavor is inferior to the Type 97.

You say things like that and my face goes like . . .

I own 2 500's and an 870. Both are great and cycle fine no problems ever. I shoot the 870 more since I added the magpul stuff :). But both are excellent go to choices! My 500's feel as tight and solid as my 870

Wasn't there talk of a Mossberg friendly SGA stock at shot show this year?

I'm definitely liking the magpul gear on my Fabarm :D

Your rattly, loose, cheap crappy knockoff junk shotgun is the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test. The 870 DID NOT. Take that for what it's worth.

"...870 is a better buy..." It's not.
"...and she liked it..." And that's the only thing that matters. Her shotgun, not yours.
"...know anything about women..." Doesn't help and they'll just change the rules anyway. The answer is, 'Yes, dear." and stiffle yourself.

This is perhaps the most intelligent thing that you have ever posted on CGN lol.

Don't be a "typical male" and try and push your woman into doing what you want.

It'll only cause resentment later.

Let her buy whatever she wants.

870 is just a cheap shotgun unless you're talking the MCS or Police.

Also how much door kicking is she going to be doing? Zero... Right?

Let her buy whatever she likes.

BTW this is not just gun advice. This is relationship advice.

IMO the 870 is inferior to the 500. I'm sure there are many that will disagree, but that's fine. Lets start with the safety, the tang safety on the 500 is far easier to manipulate than the cross bolt of the Remington. No question, unless as stated before you are running a pistol grip (which I do not like on a shotgun, but again that's my opinion). Secondly, the slide release on the 500 can be manipulated without having to move your strong hand at all. The Remington you need to break your grip. A third point, is the Mossberg has dual extractors white the 870 has one. And just to put the last nail in the coffin for the 870, the shell lifter/loading area is far superior on the 500. There are no risks of pinching your thumb, which can be nasty but mostly annoying. Almost forgot one last feature, when hunting with the 500 I commonly unload the magazine by pressing that little tab that holds the shells in the tube, which lets the shells slide freely out of the magazine. Much easier than the 870, and beats cycling the action.

That's a good point.

A gun that bites me gets cursed at, then put back in the safe.

A gun that bites her gets sold.

Everything is backwards on an 870 for me. The safety and slide release is backwards. The barrel is frequently loose in the receiver and ends up needing to be shimmed. The ejector is the weirdest setup I have ever seen. It is way too heavy and cumbersome. If I were her I would get a Benelli Nova. The Ferarri of pumps. The 870 is the Cavalier of pumps ;)

My preference has always been the Remington 870, however if you come across a good deal on a 590A1 with 18.5 inch barrel and ghosting sights buy it & run you will not regret it, picture of my recent score Mossberg 590A1 SBS 14 inch factory barrel with bead sight...

Unless your going for a CLASSIC Wingmaster or a Police model...870s are not worth the price (or weight).

Want a nice shotgun for a nice price?

Hatsan Escort pump shotguns...comes in a blued or nickle finish...my g/f got the nickle one as she liked the look of it best (all looks are what she cared about most haha). I believe it cost around $400? new and the blued model is quite a bit cheaper. It holds 7+1 rounds, takes up to 3" loads, comes with sling swivels, has a dovetail notched top receiver and this one also came with a top folding pistol gripped buttstock that also held shells...much like a SPAZ's.

This shotgun was bought almost 3.5 years ago and it has seen at least 10,000 bird loads, 2,000 slugs and 2,000 buck loads (I reload) and the odd flare (there is NO choke in it). The gun gets used in the mud, rain and snow...it is only cleaned (internally) if it got really wet and the barrel gets cleaned MAYBE 2 times a year.

ZERO issues.

Bonus points to impress her if you can shoot it like this....AND not hit yourself in the process. :p

EDIT --- The only "meh" thing is the recoil pad on this gun (at least the older models) kinda sucked...it WAS rubber but it was very thin and stiff so after about 50 or so rounds of buck/slugs it hurt her shoulder so a nice recoil pad or butt slip on would be a nice touch!!!

I suggest trading your GF to a Mossberg guy and getting yourself a Rem 870 GF.
There are definitely some things that are deal-breakers and this is one of them ;-)

How do people get to thinking there is only one choice in a flooded market? 870's are alright but I'll take a Mossberg or Benelli over one any day. Be it express, wingmaster or police the price goes up faster than the quality when compared to other brands. Its fine if you like them but let the damn girl pick what she wants, not what you want.

A major +1 to this!

Some advice from middle age gunnut:

Young grasshopper, you still have several hours before WSS closes this evening to reverse your EPIC FAIL!! Any time my girl looks at me with a gun in her hands and even mildly suggests that she likes it - whoa!!! TIME FOR ACTION!!! If there is a example illustrating the need for the fastest gun sale ever, THIS IS IT!!! It matters not which gun it is because girls with guns are HOT HOT HOT.

After your world-record-setting speed purchase, you, with your 870, and she, with her 590, should immediately blow off work to rush out and spend the afternoon in a clay/balloon/stump destroying Remmy vs Mossy EPIC shoot off blamfest, where at least 8 cases of various shotgun ammo get turned into the lovely sound of plastic-y falling hulls. Given where you like to go shoot, you might even get to bond over some awesome couples orientated 12 gauge bear defense action, complete with the after-adrenaline high of near-death-at-the-jaws-of-the-dreaded-canadian-killer-grizzly. Then, as the thunder rolls off into the hills and through the foggy cordite smoke you see her smiling with that jump-me-now-look; the buttstock propped against her tight jeans and cradling that 590 with lanky arms protruding from a summer tank top, come back here and tell me whether or not it was a good buy.

GET GOING!!

Cheers,

Brobee

I think this is a perfect opportunity for you to test out a Mossberg 500 in the field, and if she likes it that's a bonus, I don't think there is anything wrong with either, and saying the 870 has more upgrade options is BS imo.
I used to get bit by the loading gate on my DA Grizz (870) but it hasn't been an issue since the first couple times I've had it out so I don't think that's an arguable point on either, you will adapt and get used to it.....

A 590A1 may be too heavy for the GF.
I read once that the Mossberg pump action "rattle" was designed so it could still cycle in dirt, mud, etc....think AK47's.
The only 870 I liked (that I owned) was a Wingmaster. It was silky smooth. That said, I prefer my 590A1's and their ergs.
