My XCR-L 223 experience....?

I want the heavy barrel, I just don t need all that side rail space. That will thin the front grip area nicely.

There's about 2lbs of unneeded rail, for my purposes.

Just out of curiosity, what will be the effect of having a light barrel vs heavy barrel? Aside from muzzle climb. The imbalance with the heavy barrel drives me crazy. I am wondering if the accuracy will be affected, Perhaps barrels flex while being fired?

Exacty. Reduced flex, tighter harmonic shockwave, thereby, potentially better accuracy.
Plus, with a piston gun you ve got the piston adding to this unwanted movement. Thinner barrel heats up quicker as well.

A member on here has done this exact mod, and quite a few people on the XCR forums and it actually looks quite nice. Most people are doing it more for a better handling of the rifle not so much for weight savings. Most guys are finding it shaves off something like 7.05oz or about 0.44lbs. Also felt heat coming the receiver was much more noticeable after firing with out the buffer that the little extra thickness of the rail provided. Seems like a lot of work if the overall goal is weight savings. If its to slim it up and make it more comfortable for you to shoot than I say go for it.

It would be interesting to find out how the XCR-L performs with the light barrel vs the heavy barrel. I am interested in .223, so I'm hoping it won't make that much difference.

I just figured that out re; weight. Hmmm not enough to shave it of for weight alone. Might still do it for better gripping though.
Check out "tiborasaurus rex's" sniper 101 youtube vid on barrel harmonics. Good stuff.

Wasn't my intent to be negative about a modification just sharing some information I found when I was contemplating the same thing. I have shot a XCR with a light barrel and hands down the weight difference is noticeable. It was at the range and only fired a few quick shots so I can't speak for any accuracy loss but assuming the same factors of any barrel I would think the lighter one would suffer after a while. I think barrel treatment has something to do with as well as I have shot countless rounds out of a MR1 rapidly with barely noticeable change in POI. Of course they are cryo treated barrels which to many might seem like hype but I can tell you first hand the process works. I've changed many the rifle barrels even on .22's for the exact same reason. Ads weight but the rigity does result in better accuracy.

Interesting. Btw I did not see ur post as neg in the least. I suppose the aluminum is a lot lighter than the steel. Thanks for the info. I don t want to reinvent a wheel I just like the idea of mods that actually improve an item. :)

I'm very interested in the light barrel and I am far from a precision shooter. But I'm having great difficulty finding out anything about how the light barrel performs. I've tried my best on google, but no such luck for me. I'm pretty well interested in only shooting around 100 yds. I'm thinking of my beloved XCR as something I'd carry primarily out in the bush or at the farm.

With a quality sling like a Blue Force Gear VCAS padded sling carry weight between the factory heavy barrel and the light barrel wont be noticeable enough to warrant the cost. The only real benefit your going to get out of the light barrel is it will be less front heavy. If you are still using the factory FAST stock I would also recommend replacing that with a AR type adapter and some sort of aftermarket stock. A Magpul UBR on a XCR is a beautiful combo that all tho actually ads some weight gives the rifle a more balanced feel. Adding weight isn't always a bad thing if its in the right places.

I got a used xcr-l with unknown round count, functioned flawlessly so far. Around 500 reloads down the pipe on gas setting 1.
Just got my hands on 6.8spc conversion. I didn't have a chance to shoot it yet.
Overall it is pretty reliable, fun rifle to shoot.
