2013 M14 Hunting thread

Just a couple does today. The one in my yard looked like a whitetail.
Not going out this evening. Too hot, too many bugs. Bucks will be up high so we'll see what tomorrow brings :D

I'm going tomorrow night for a small cruise around Jordan River, and then on the weekend to Cowichan Lake.

As usual I'll be using my 1919 Lithgow #1, with the rusty chamber shooting questionable reloads.

I find it funny how my 100 year old gun is the most reliable one I own.

What a difference a week makes LOL
+5 this mornin, I'm sitting about 200M up the hill from my place, in my ground blind. Seen 3 does, 2 fawns and about 20 minutes ago 2 bucks went round behind me. Not shooters though as it's 4pt (one side) or better right now. Gets the blood going :D nothing spooked so at least I know that my scent killing regimen is working.

I'm pretty ramped up for that moose hunt Carverk, when I head back to the house, I'm ripping the front end outta my jeep so I can get on installin the new one.

All set for moose and deer season. Headed to the range Monday to get some time in behind the Eotech.

I have a similar setup on an Ar-15, and you will need a riser on the eotech. Eotech 512? Outdoors, bright day, 100m- you will see a big distracting shadow at the top half of the magnified image. I got a Yankee hill eotech riser from Fabsports for about $60 that works perfect (it should, it is made for this combo). I like the looks of that, by the way...

I'm not sure how hunting season is going to go this year, got a lot on my plate and not sure how much time I'm going to have. But here is what I'll be running when it feels like an M-14 day. All of my big game hunting is now split between the M-14 and M1 Garand. Just love these rifles!

Only thing I want to do to it is change the buttstock over to a Magpul PRS, hopefully the extra weight will help balance this puppy out a bit, and get a different optic on there.

Wow I'm totally new to "battle rifles" and am normally a fine checkering and deep blued steel kinda guy, what kinda of stock is that and what kind of accuracy are you getting with handloads? HNGGG that rifle isss seeeeeeexay

It's a Troy Modular Chassis System (MCS). The buttstock is a Troy Battleaxe. Its nice, but very heavy.

I haven't started loading yet so only factory ammo so far. I get a very consistent 2 MOA, but have some success repeating very close to 1 MOA.

I'll see if I can find a few targets I had saved and post em up.

45ACPKing just got a nice big buck but not with his M14 haahaa
Are moose hunt is going to be fun both of us will be using are M14
Tom bring his ATV and I'm bring both my Rokon's
Rokon's are like M14 you can't just have one HAAHAA

I'm building my rifle for our hunt right now :)
A newly arrived piece of Holy Grail M14 unobtainium has arrived from a fellow CGN'er. I can't bust Skullboy's chops anymore... As I have one of those may 2005 production SEI Crazy Horse barrels he fondly speaks of from time to time mruhahaha (thx to the cgn'er who hooked me up BTW)

I'll have er ready to go for the trip in a couple weeks.
As for hunting success... Well, yesterday at 1:05pm.... A very healthy mature mulie met up with my newly built from scratch lee enfield no 1 mk3 bush rifle. (For pics see the milsurp forum :D ) my wife got her first buck , a 3x4 mulie, friday evening with the same rifle.

I'll try my best to have an m14 in my hands when the next opportunity at an animal presents itself if I'm fortunate.

Anyone else have hunting success yet this season?

so as hunting season fast approaches..... who's hunting with their m14 type rifle , how ya setting it up and what are ya chasing after?

Does my Garand count? Two deer to its credit so far and hopefully more to come this season with it. It has a leather butt cuff from Stuart Branson (in the edged weapons forum) for a longer LOP and a repro 1907 sling from Pacific Canvas & Leather. Front sight is a national match blade and the rear is the standard base with national match aperture for more precision.

OK M14 hunters...how do you roll? A round in the chamber with safety on, or do you rack the op rod when you spot game, risking spooking the game?
Newbie hunters want to know!

Where I hunt the shots are generally fairly close and happen fast. The only way to go is with a round in the chamber and the safety on, almost anything else is too slow.

This is about the stupidest advice I've ever seen...
Please explain how seeing the target with your left eye and NOT seeing it with your right will help acquire the target. As I understand it only one eye can see through the sights at a time.

The solution I suggested of enlarging the rear sight is the only practical solution.

Actually, yomomma is correct. Shooting with both eyes open allows you to see everything. Your brain superimposes the sight image from the right eye onto the overall view seen by your left eye and you have a view of everything in front of you while looking through the sights at your target.

Or do you think that the thousands of action shooters who shoot with both eyes open do it for no reason at all? It is by far the best way for fast shots and shooting moving targets. My Garand has the national match aperture on it (i.e. - smaller than the standard one) and I had no problem shooting a running deer with it because I keep both eyes open.
