SR22 Rifle Questions

Hi all;
So I just traded an AR15 upper, I no longer need, for a nearly new SR22 and a bunch of accessories (including a full length Dlask top and bottom rail and a Magpul AFG). I have never actually seen or handled an SR22, but if I don't like it, they seem to sell fairly quickly on the EE :) I do own a DAR22, so I am familiar with 10/22 basics. I could just wait until mine arrives to measure it and answer the following, but thought I would see if any SR22 owners have any help or advice to offer...

My questions:

1) Could I mount a Dlask 8" 10-22 barrel with the XB5 Flashhider/Muzzle brake and have the muzzle of the XB5 flush with, or protruding slightly, from the front end of the hand guard? If not is there another shorter hand guard available? Can the barrel free float (support block removed) or would I need to modify the support block?

2) What is the o/a length from the collapsed butt stock to the front of the hand guard? I am wondering if I will need a full length fixed stock to keep it non restricted. Or maybe fix the stock to keep it from fully collapsing?

3) Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent, compact but affordable optic for the SR22. I would want at least a 3x or 4x magnification.

Cheers
TEG

I think the stock HG is 9", so with an 8" bbl and flash hider, you are going to be near flush. Yes, pretty much any AR handguard will fit. I run a carbine length hogue (7") and a pistol length (4") on mine. I just left the bbl FF and removed the support block.

With an 8" bbl you will most likely have to pin the stock to keep OAL over 26". I am not sure if a flash hider length contributes to the OAL measurement for non-restricted?. I had to pin the stock on one of my 10", and I went with fixed stocks on the 10 & 12" bbl ones. The full length fixer AR stock requires a new buffer tube, I went with a UTG for $50.

decent and affordable 3x optic? I think NC Star, UTG, for ~$100. For slightly >$100, Maybe Nikon P-223 in in 3 x32.

Glad to see this thread started. My first SR-22 will arrive any day now. I'll be wondering mainly about mags and optics.

I put a Bushnell TRS-25 reddot on mine (you'll need a riser or the high-mount). For mags, since BX-25x2 are now available in Canada I'd get at lease five of those!

Thanks for the replays, I will post more as I get the rifle and make the modifications. Can anyone share pics of their SR22 with an 8" or 10" barrel?

10" bbl with shroud threaded at the front, ie, the shroud only adds ~ 1/4" to OAL. 4" HG, ARFX fixed stock with 1" shoulder pad. OAL is just over 26". Mag is a BX-1 JB welded to an airsoft.

Like bcdon says, the BX-25x2 would be a good mag.

This a 12" bbl, 7" HG, fixed A2 stock:

Thanks for the pics. That first one is amazing. I really like the skeleton stock (so much so that I just managed to talk DocBurN into selling me his!), the short handguard and shroud give it a real "Suppressed MP5" type look. While I also like the look of the airsoft magazine, I can't help thinking that a skinny 25 rounder would suit the MP5 look even better. However the 5.56 style mag really looks good on the "C7" style lower rifle. I am glad to see other members with the same "SBR" fetish.
Cheers

ha, too funny, it was Docburn's SR-22 build that convinced me to go with the skeletal stock!

I've since removed the elcan clone and put an NC Star 1.5-6x scope on it.

I actually don't remember seeing DocBurN's build but I went searching and found this:

I am guessing that if he used an 8" barrel and a 7" hand guard, my idea of using an 8" barrel with the stock 9" handguard will not work :(

Its an 8" Dlask barrel, and its about 3 3/8" from the end. I think a 12" would be about perfect.

Thanks paint gunner, that picture is very useful. So the 8" barrel, even with a 3" +/- flash hider is too short for the stock hand guard. That's a shame as Dlask only seems to have 8" barrels at the moment, and I really don't want to buy a shorter hand guard. Here is a picture from the seller, of the SR22 that is on its way to me:

As you say, a 12" barrel would be perfect, or a 10" with a 2"-3" flash hider.

I think a 12" barrel would stick out just a bit further than the hand guard and look good. It all depends on the look your after, I had the barrel before the SR22 stock.
