Brief Can-am socom 18 review

The only method that worked for me is getting the FH itself into a vice and rotating the whole rifle. Maybe your armorer can help you out.

I don't have a bench vice and I already broke 2 strap wrenches and a set of vice grips....guess I'll hope my gun plumber will give me a hand...or ditch it. Less impressed with this thing by the minute.

Don't lose hope! Mine was the same and it just needs a vice to get a killer grip on that basterd. Mine's a good shooter so far. The missing paint on the FH makes it look "proven" lol

Thanks Morgan. Already had a beer and the wife found her chore list (groan). Maybe on your next shift (if I cant get the boys at the unit to look at it).

Sure no problem , I am back in on the 23rd or you can drop by chalkriver as I have a vice in the shed . For mine I just put a rag around the muzzle brake and put that end in the vice .Then unscrewed the rifle from the muzzle brake.

You will need to remove the FH in order to remove the gas plug for cleaning.
Gas plug still comes off even with flash hider reversed. I used a vice to take it off, however the only problem with it reversed is that you might get rust forming between the flash hider and the barrel if you are not careful.

light coat of grease will stop rust if you are really worried. or find a muzzle thread protector. the flash hider does work though . this thing throws of nice fireballs !!

Anyone in the greater Vancouver area that has a bench vice and some DIY experience that's willing to help me out with re-indexing the barrel? I learned it at one of the clinics but don't have the tools!!! You'll have my gratitude and a six pack in return haha.

I've been following this thread with interest while I sit on the fence, hoping to see signs of a major improvement in QC.
Right now I would say this Norc is no better than the previous batches which is a bit disappointing, but not unexpected.
It looks like many of the old issues are still present, tho the finish has improved.
Still, its a good price just as a base for a build, and we all like tinkering or we wouldn't buy Norcs...right :)
That said, I got off the fence now and would get a used shorty off EE or wherever and polish that turd instead.
Tight groups and op rods :)

Got mine last week, cleaned it and found the following,
Op Rod guide needed to be peened, it was really loose, trigger group is almost impossible to get out and into the stock but works well, to be honest it is the best trigger I have ever felt on a 305 norc. Flash hider came off easily. Front site needed one shim to snug at 9:00. Took it to the range and it feeds and functions well on a full mag, i am having weak ejections on the last round, the empty casing is sitting in the reciever some times. It is ejecting between 2:00 and 12:00 never seen an empty case flying in my site picture before. Any of you folks have any ideas on ejection? I need to improve this. And make sure you locktite the flash hider as mine came loose after 20 rounds! I was shooting around 3 - 3.5 inch groups at a 100m with a 4 moa red dot using norc steel cased.

I have a stripper clip guide mount that my buddy made that sits low enough to use an aimpoint on and still get a good cheek weld.

I got mine today. Rifle looks ok once been clean. The bolt is little bit stiff and doesn't close automatically( no mag in). I have to push it a little and then rack it back. Does it normal? This is my first M14 and Norinco. I think it is a good winter project for me to do and learn about the M14 platform. Overall, it is good value for what you pay for.
The FH isn't come off easy like some member do. I thinks I need to find member here with vice and located in GTA area.

Are you describing using the bolt release button to allow the action to go forward with no mag inserted ? If so that is normal ....forget trying to use it for that just pull back on the cocking handle a bit .

No, it wasn't. I rack the action all the way back and it hold in the position without the use of bolt release button. I press the bolt release button and it seems no action at all. I have to tiny push the changing handle to let the bolt go forward. I shot my friends m305 and it just different. At the range, I load a mag and insert. I pull the changing handle all the way back and let go since the bolt is lock by the bolt catch. Just like the most semi auto firearm. Maybe I did something wrong since I am very new to this platform.
Also, the safety seems doesn't working at all. I hope someone in GTA area can give me a tutor or take a look of it.

Safety only works when a round is chambered, bolt wont cycle forward on an empty mag by design.
Thanks, my bolt won't cycle forward properly even there are no mag in it. I am not saying it won't go forward but you have give a tiny push the changing handle and it just go forward. I haven't take it apart since I just go it an two hours ago but I will dissemble and clean it tonight. Hope I didn't get the bad one.
