2013 Whitetail's lets see them

IMG_8240.JPG

Our group of four harvested two bucks this year. This is one I shot on our fourth day which turned out to be a five point non typical. It was a beautiful morning with light rain/snow. It was perfectly quiet in between the rain and you could hear a pin drop. I spotted this buck walking along the ridge I was standing on and couldn't hear him coming at all. I took the shot offhand which ended up being a bit high which broke his back and took out one of his lungs. He dropped right where he was shot however and this is how I found him.

The rifle is a Browning Composite Stalker 30-06 with a 2-7x Bushnell Trophy scope. One piece of gear I picked up this year which was a God-send in the wet weather was a Gore-Tex suit from a sale that Propper had when they were clearing out their non US made clothing.

Thanks for looking.

Not the best field pick, but got this fella at 120 yards with the ole 30/30. came out to 142lbs after field dressing, dressing and head removal. Nice way to end the whitetail season. Bring on the yotes and wolves..The past four years have been hard on the deer and a buffet to predators in this are of Alberta. I'm skipping out on the supplementals this year for conservation.

Well I managed to get three deer tags this year and my son got one. Last weekend I was successful in harvesting two antlerless deer using one tag from my son and one from me that are posted earlier in this thread. That was during the rifle season which is now over here and now I managed one with the bow. That leaves me one tag and thinking I might go out again.
With my son not being here having to be chased to get up and out of bed today I was able to get in the stand before the sun was up. I went to the hunt camp in Dunchurch this morning and it was dark and foggy so it was a slow drive. It was going to rain here all day so no better place to hunt out of than the box stand. When I reached the stand it was still dark and very foggy but I could hear deer all around. I was texting my buddy asking him about the tire tracks into the trailer when I looked up and a deer was right there.
It was so dark and foggy I could not see very far and the deer was at the salt lick 60 feet away. If the deer was any farther away I would never see it. You can see from the pictures that at 8:30, almost an hour later it was still dark and very foggy. I closed the other two windows, opened the window she was at all the way, lined up on her and shot. The shot looked good and she took off very fast. I waited half an hour and went to look for her.
It didn’t look good at first as the arrow was now where to be found and there was no blood. I couldn’t figure out how I could have missed as she was so close and didn’t jump the string. We with no sign I started to follow where I thought she went. With so much deer track at this spot I could not really follow her. I did follow tracks that look to be running but there was still no blood. Well about fifty yards away I found her down. The bolt did not go all the way through and I guess with it blocking the blood and the rain I could not really track her.
Well I called the butcher and explained the fortunate problem I had. He said he was just about to start my deer from last week. He said bring the deer tomorrow and he will butcher all three at once and I can pick them up next Friday when they are good and frozen. I don’t know if we can wait another week to taste the venison.

My 12 year old nephew got his apprenticeship card last winter and this was his very first deer hunt in my stand with my gun with me by his side. This big buck came right up the fence line to us head on at 20 yards, he put the first shot right in the boiler maker! Very proud of him! On a funny note, I had bought a bottle of Tinks Power Buck, synthetic dominant buck urine. I sprayed around the blind and the valve stuck open so I threw it in the bushes down wind in front of the blind. Not a half hour late this guy comes right in. The next morning in the same stand another big buck came in......I had let my uncle use my stand as he has never shot a whitetail and he didn't see it. From where we were sitting on day 2 we watched as the buck walked right past them lol

Am I seeing a neck shot exit wound AND a gut shot exit wound?

Awsome first buck for the young fellow. I know hunters that have hunted for 40 yrs and not even seen a buck of that calibre.

Fiance's first buck

This is my fiance's 5x4 whitetail buck she shot on Nov. 12th, 3rd day of our hunt, outside of rocky mountain house. This was the only deer we saw move all week, she got lucky! She shot it with a hand loaded 270 wsm 130gr Nosler Ballistic tip. The shot was 128 yrds and the deer dropped where it stood. Upon skinning the deer we actually recovered the bullet. It isn't a monster but for her first buck he sure is nice.

This is my first attempt at a euro mount pre-bleaching.

Five days of hunting west Man and I had to settle for a dry doe. Passed on several forkers and a spike early off. Deer numbers are way down in my hunting area. Lets all hope for a reasonable winter for the good of all...

That is a great buck and a great woman....

Great photos and stories from everyone, congratulations.

I finally got into a heavyweight this year too after taking only yearling bucks and antlerless deer for the past 5 or 6 years. Here is a pic, I named him Sausage;)

And the next day, I went out for some Steak;

Been a great season so far, somehow I don't feel real motivated for the late bow season in the cold!
