NEW ITEM: Dominion Arms Socom 18

Thanks, I have ordered the smith's extended bolt stop. I took a closer loon and found the the existing stop only made contact with a very small area of the bolt and it was not square to the stop. I took a light stone to the bearing face and it works fine now. But since there is so little contact area it is rather touchy. I'll comment on how the smith one works as soon as I get it on.

I got my Socom 18 late last week. I stripped off all the oil using biocircle and did a quick inspection on it. The front sight is tilting to the left and it failed the no go head spacing. A friend of mine has shot his with the head spacing failed and he is satisfied with the grouping he has. The front sight tilt I can live with but the headspacing has me wondering. Has anyone else headspaced their rifle?

Does anyone else get their magazine caught on the spring guide when trying to insert? Seems like the angle is off / it sticks out too far. I mean the side that is facing towards you when the rifle is upside down, not the pointed side that goes in the hole in the magazine.

I plan to get the troy battlerail and casm from m14.ca, should I just replace the spring guide? I still haven't learned how much benefit this offers.

Are you sure you're putting the mag in correctly? You should be tilting the mag back towards yourself 10-20 degrees, inserting it into the mag well and then locking it into place by rotating it to the rear.

It's hard to quantify the accuracy effect of a recoil spring guide rod, but you can easily see how much smoother and more consistent the op rod movement becomes with one of the aftermarket rods. It's such a simple and easy upgrade, it's hard not to recommend it.

I am wondering if you are having the same problem as me.

Is it really hard to insert or remove your trigger group?

I have a problem with the hammer following the bolt forwards as well is it being very had to remove mags.

I think this is because the stock is poorly fitted. I can tell that my trigger group is being forced in at an angle in order to lock it in place.

I think I have to remove a tiny bit of material from the stock where the rear of the trigger group rests.

Maybe somebody could confirm this by looking on an M14 that works properly. Does the very bottom of you trigger group touch the rear face of your mag body when the mag is fully inserted? If there is a gap there, how big is it? The thickness of a hair, .030"?

Thanks!

Yeah that's how I put the magazine in.. I think only pictures could show the problem. The better spring guide isn't very expensive so I might as well just replace it. The shape of the better spring guide on the rounded nub side looks different than mine too, so maybe it'll get two birds stoned at once.

Thanks for the reply.

While I'm posting, anyone know who sells 5/5 or 5/10 mags for this rifle? Those honkin 5/20's are too damn long, considering you can only use 1/4 of the capacity.

Possibly a noob queston, but: Is the Springfield Armory SOCOM (with 16" barrel) restricted in Canada? Just doesn't seem right, regardless of "less than 18.5" barrel length. I would buy that tonight; but if it's restricted, I may just pick up one of these. How does the quality compare? thoughts?

SA SOCOM is Restricted

As for quality, I've no idea never held one. But for the price it better be damn near perfect and not need a thing done to it.

Headspaced the fired cases:

Steel norc 10 cases avg 1.6425

Brass Federal 5 cases avg 1.6410

But I'm having issues with no left lug engagement, waiting to hear back regarding replacement hopefully.

I fixed my hammer follow and mag change problems.

I deepened the area of the stock that the rear of the trigger group fits into. At first I used a chisel, but found it difficult to work with the synthetic, so I switched to my dremmel. This made it easier to remove the smallest amount possible. I made the indentation about 1/16" deeper. I also extended this area rearward the same distance.

The trigger guard now slides into place with finger pressure. The trigger guard closes with a firm push. Best of all are that my hammer follow issue is gone and my mags are much easier to change.

The clue that tipped me off was a mark I saw inside the stock, directly above the trigger. The middle, deeper part there had a little indentation from the trigger contacting it. If you remove your trigger group and wiggle the trigger a little, you will see the little "horn" on top of the trigger. That is what was hitting the stock.

I was having light primer strikes caused from the hammer hitting the wall of the trigger group housing because it was too thick , and i was also having very hard mag seating and changing problems .. From comparing the socom trigger group to my 2009 Norinco group i could see that the mag latch is a bit too long on the top end and the front of the housing wall was too thick causing the hammer to not fully drop , a quick file job on the two spots and all problems are cured .. Im wondering if all the socom trigger groups are out of spec like mine was?

I think I saw your post earlier on about that trigger group issue. I remember the pic. That front wall was pretty thick.

I believe that my trigger group is fine. It works well in and out of the rifle and fits properly not that I have fixed the mal-adjusted stock.

It seems like random faults are finding their way into peoples guns at the factory, without rhyme or reason. Obviously, issues of quality control need no mention. But I am comforted somewhat by the fact that most of the reported issues have been relatively easy to correct.

That said, have you fixed yours yet? I wonder about which side of that front wall of your trigger group is out of spec... Is it the rear side, limiting hammer travel, or is it the front side, pushing the whole group so far back that the hammer barely strikes?

When out of the rifle, with the hammer fully forward, the front fact of my hammer appears to be at 90 degrees to the floor of the trigger group.

Am I just special or is the shorty and ammo deal not posted anymore?

Yes the socom ammo deals are over, and just 17 socom 18's lest individual sales left $499 plus tax

Edit: and 46 Dominion Arms M14 Rifle left
