What Do You Look For in a Black Rifle?

1 -Reliability
2 -Durability
3 -Accuracy

In that order.
Basically it had better take rain, snow, mud and a beating without stopping or breaking. It has to be well made and it has to hold 2" at 100 meters.

Rifle size, dont care, I'm over 6'
Rifle weight, dont care, I'm in good shape.

The bulk of my training was with C7, so ambi controls and such don't appeal to me... That said, my current rig has a longer top rail so I was able to accommodate an Eotech and STS magnifier...

I like a rifle to be simple, reliable and accurate. I am not a fan of bolting a bunch of stuff onto a rifle (flashlight coffee maker dvd burner). When it comes to looks I love the look of a shorty carbine like an xm177e2.

Pretty much what J996 said. I don't care much for rails, other than a top rail for mounting optics. Ambi controls are nice, but not essential.

This ^^^

But mostly I look for a black or tan one, maybe a green one if I can't find black or tan. It has to have a cool logo as well and a popular brand name I can brag about owning. :stirthepot2:

JK. I like my AR's simple and light, I don't want a bunch of crap like lasers and flashlights hanging off them, I don't shoot at night.
If it has no practical function I don't want it.

I agree with those three, but I can sum those up quite easily in to one catagory that covers those three. #1 Country of manufacture
and I would not be happy with 2" at 100

2 inch is pretty standard for a factory rifle using 55 FMJ. Pretty good for a noob to shooting a black rifle.
Hopefully the rifle is capable of better but that is a pretty decent minimum requirement. Your typically into $2000+ rifles to get better than that.

there you go, price point is usually another good way to judge accuracy, durability and reliability except is some rare collector gun type cases

I agree completely, but most first time buyers aren't going to spend $2000+ on an AR or similar.

OP, if you are going to buy an AR I suggest you look into Stag or Spikes for mid level affordable AR's, If you want to spend more then anything like LMT, HK, PWS, BCM, Knights, Colt are all great rifles you should never have problems with. There are others but those were the first to come to mind. Maybe an ACR? You can have it converted to non restricted later on.

If you want something non restricted you will be spending close to $2000 minimum and going up quickly from there. XCR-L is probably the best bang for the buck but something like an SL8-4 or a Swiss Arms, or an AR180B-2 are good choices depending on what you like the looks of.
The non restricted options are limited and get expensive quickly.

Save some budget for mags and ammo as well as some optics if you feel you need them.

The worst thing about AR's is that most people can't own just one. I own 3 right now plus a couple other 223 semi's and at one point I was up to 4 AR's.
If you want a long barrel accurate AR check out my ad in the EE ;)

We haven't even touched on whether you want 223 or if you have the budget for 308.
How about some more details on what you plan to do with your new black rifle when you get it?

He didn't say he's buying a rifle, he just said he wants some opinions on what people prefer. :)

that is unfortunate

good suggestion or wait a couple months and see if the NR does get released like promised this spring

I agree completely, quality costs money
XCR-L is probably the best bang for the buck
I disagree, I would not venture down that road after seeing what friends have gone through with theirs

Agree 100%

and rightly so, our fickle gun laws have guaranteed our retailers and importers a premium price and profit on NR black rifles

Save some budget for mags and ammo as well as some optics if you feel you need them.
great idea, try and stay away from the cheapest alternatives because sometimes it is more of a headache than it's worth

I disagree, I currently don't own any and have no incling to buy any again

I would prefer 308 if budget allows, gives you the option of going hunting if it is NR

I used to carry the rifle around.
For this reason I'm into the lightweight, simple carbines...and yes, I'm still in fairly good shape.
most if not all "black rifle" carbines are clasified as "restricted" by barrel length, where can you legaly "carry" these rifles around long enough that the weight from the extra barrel length becomes such an issue?.
