FBI replacing .40cal with 9mm?

45 is a lumbering bumble bee.
9 is a wasp.
i guess that makes 40 a horse fly?

ive got the M&P in all 3 and and i go to my 9 more because i know i can hit all 10 shots where i want them fast.
the 45 im good for the first one on target, rest is anyones guess as to where they are gonna end up.
the 40 is just fun and snappy.

meh, like it was said above, i dont plan on holding off a armed siege from the FBI anytime soon.

but just to mix this up a bit..... 357 sig trumps all for punch and capacity!!!!

begin!

Pretty simple Google DocGKR and the wound ballistic tests he's done and wounds he's studied. 9mm is king.

Hummm -

Well, I enjoy my 9's (both CZ Shadow & Glock), but my 'go to' gun is absolutely my SIG P226 TACOPS in 40cal.

Like someone else said - it's just a 'feel good' caliber, it's hard not to giggle (just a little) when ya slam in the mag and squeeze off a round!

After all the studies and throwing ballistics data around in the 1990's, it's back to the 9mm?

Don't get me wrong, I've never been a fan of the 40 S&W. I love the .45 ACP for defense and the 9mm for cheap, practice and plinking in the 1911 platforms.

With he right bullet, a 9mm is just as lethal as a .40. I's have zero issues using the 9mm as a defensive sidearm.

The real difference is shooting through things like windshields (I think it was the Miami shootout that brought this front and center)

10mm trumps 357 in every way in my mind. :)

In Canada most of us will never use our pistols (or rifles/shotguns) for self defense. So this talk of capacity, ballistics and terminal performance is a waste of time. Shoot what you like best and let others shoot what they like best.

This is a discussion [argument?] that will never end...

I carry a .40 at work, and I like to shoot it on my own time. There is a huge investment in the .40S&W and police departments don't change sidearms on a whim. I would say that the .40 will last at least as long as the .38Sp did, and for the same reasons. Yes, the modern 9mm is probably more effective than the 9mm of 20-30 years ago, and its recoil is a little more manageable, but anybody who can learn to shoot a 9mm can learn to shoot a .40.

This is all IMHO....I'm quite sure that I'll 'go away' before the .40S&W ever does.

Agreed. Whether you like .40 or not it's not going anywhere. The same rumours were out about 9mm when everyone went with .40 and that .45ACP would die off when the MIL / LE switched to 9mm. The talk of the time was that 9mm was inadequate much like how the 5.56 is not suitable for anything outside of MOUT operations and even then.... yet all calibers are still going strong.

For Canadian shooters as mentioned... it's just a simple matter of preference. I run guns in all these calibers but my go to guns (if for nothing else other than enjoyment) are my .40's. Now if I want to sport a huge sh*t-eating grin I bang off some .460S&W!

So FBI small arms munitions procurement rationale :

.38 SPL - HERP ---> 10MM - DERP ---> .40 - HERP-DERP --- > 9MM - PEW PEW PEW

Am I close?

I find it kind of funny that up until the 10mm came on the market and was found too severe in terms of recoil that the 9mm was adequate for a couple of world wars and numerous police actions- truth be told a lot of folks wanted the 10, but it was hard on people and guns- but instead of going back to tried and true , "new gun syndrome " took over and they "cured" the 10mm to 40 s&w-but a 40 "wears out" quicker than a 9mm- and now with budgets being tight we're revisiting the 9nn yet again-which when you really get down to it, is a 38 special 158 grain load- the same load as the police carried for years

I suppose most .45 naysayers to this 100 + year old argument fail to comprehend why the .45 ACP has in fact been around since 1908?, through 2 WW's, Korea, Vietnam, countless skirmishes up to Iraq, Afghanistan and all other parts unknown to most of us. The .45 did and does the job it was intended for better than most then and now. Witness the special forces units and what their pistol and caliber of choice is?
The 9MM switch was more a geo-political move than anything else and then all hyped up by the need for greater capacity and termed "wonder nines". There was nothing wondrous about them other than being a good training tool for recoil sensitive newby's and a cost cutting measure for the military's & L.E.'s bean counters to get more bangs for the buck until they realised too many LEO's were being killed because their "9's" weren't doing the job needed and so enter the .40 's with a bigger hole, higher energy and more recoil friendly? That debate will also go on forever.
Bottom line there is no perfect cartridge in a hand held firearm having under a 6" barrel.
But for me the .45 comes damned close, and I have shot them all in the last 45 years, 25 years with 2 Colt Delta Elite's, (3) .40 S&W's and a bucket of 9's.
If you can't do it with the .45 Auto, it shouldn't be tried.

:agree: The .40 S&W is not going anywhere. I bought a G22 and a 40-9 conversion barrel. Like the idea that I can shoot .40 and 9 from the same gun. Like the snappiness of the .40 and the 9 for cheaper ammo.

Shot placement is key. Neither caliber is a magic one shot stopper. Due to increased mag capacity's , the 9mm will keep you in the fight longer. We are talking about the FBI, in the US. Not whats legal in Canada, so get it right.
