It is definitely a weak point in the design.
Still, for $330 find me a better modern hunting rifle....
The Marlin X series rifles: much better stock, better trigger, better recoil pad, better finish, better accuracy.

Perhaps everything but accuracy. Interesting that they have an accutrigger on their gun while Savage does not.
I have owned and shot seven Marlin X rifles, in every caliber they produced except 308 Win. A few of them were exceptionally accurate, delivering five-inch three-shot groups at 300 meters on our silhouette range. That's 327 yards!
None of them, not one, shot groups larger than eight inches at that distance. Try that some time. It's a lot different than shooting at 100.

That is great shooting. Now, do it five more times, and let us know the results. Not saying it can't be done, but the real test is not a one shot event.
The Marlins would do it every time I went to the range. Still have one in 243. It is one of the exceptional ones.
