One step further... keep the BLR .308 even "after" you are sure of the .45/70... I have had one for more than 30 years... they are keepers.

For a 45-70 don't even look at anything other than an original 1886 Win or the newer Brownings or Winchesters made by Miroku. The Mirokus are the finest made lever guns today, don't even glance at the Marlins, spend the extra 500 bucks and get the best on the market and you won't regret it.

While my favorite lever gun/calibre combo is the Winchester model 71 Deluxe in 348WCF, I won't be parting with my Marlins in 45-70, 444 and 44-40 any time soon.
