To buy a .410 or not to buy a .410

Savage makes a brake action .22 LR/.410 I don't remember what the model is a bud of mine has it and often lends it to me for rabbit hunting... I love that thing and often want to buy one when I have money to blow yet blow my money on other stupid stuff then reel bad for not getting my own... BUY ONE NOW... Go get one do it they are great guns and the .410 is very good for rabbit hunting trust me I live in Alberta any idea how many rabbits we have here??

That would be a nice combination, would not mind having that ..

I have a Winchester 9410 that I use for rabbits and love it.I get kick out of levering that 410 shell and seeing the empty eject[/QUOTE

Yes, this and the Marlin .410 lever are the ony .410 shotguns I would own. And only because I could feel like a cowboy, while out hunting.

You should really consider the 28ga; it patterns considerably better than a 410 and carries enough shot(3/4oz-1oz) to put it in 20ga territory.
Recoil on a 28ga isn't really much more than the 410.
28ga shells are just as expensive and uncommon as 410 shells.

With all this in mind, I don't understand why people still gravitate to the 410.

The only thing the 410 has got going is the availability of guns.

I had one for a while...used it as my "survival" gun...the bad was limited range and the price of shells being 2x or more then the cost of 12g shells! I personally found after A LOT of testing that 3" shells shoot WORSE patterns then 2.5"...which is fine with me, as they are even more expensive lol. My gun had a MOD choke and personally shot #6 well enough to kill small game within 20 yards and it could shoot the tiny 1/5oz slugs onto a pie plate sized target out to about 30 yards.

At least the gun/ammo for a .410 packs up lightly but I am now just carrying a .22LR with lots of ammo instead :)

I have a win model42 full choke at the trap club I shoot 16yd targets with it I shoot fairly fast so the targets a breaking at 30to maybe 35yds factory 3" load of 7.5's I do use it on sharptails and Huns early in the season works great for barn yard piegeons .

Always wanted a 28 gauge. I have 10 gauge, 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410

The availability of guns and ammo in a 28 gauge have been a deterrent for me.

I have a Remington 410 break action and a Mossberg 410 bolt action . They do not get much use , but are good to have around when introducing a new shooter to shotguns as the recoil is quite light....

Guns are not difficult to find for me but yes unless you reload 28ga ammo in my neck of the woods is.
28 ga is special like a 16ga and will quickly win your heart and become your go to gun

Life is short so grab one someday

I shoot 28ga better than I can 12ga and have since I first shot one probally 45 years ago

The 410 now is my humbler for when I get into a zone with the others and start to run them on a regular basis and get a big head :D That old pair of 410 wingmaster / skeet I still have brings me back to earth
and quickly
Cheers

Hunted grouse with a Savage 22/410 for years. Now using a 16 gauge double. Dense bush in our country and that was the major factor in my decision. I love my Savage but the number of pellets and knock down power is just not there. I like the weight of the 410, pack it all day. If conditions allow the 410 is my first choice, never shot a 28 so no comparison there. Ammo price not really a factor for hunting alone but would be if you are shooting skeet/trap.

Ordered a H&R .410 from Prarie Gun Traders! We have a young son who can use it as a starter gun in a few years so thought it will be usefull, thanks for all the input CGN!

Burnsy56- thanks for the link, my 410 arrived today via Canada post. Cleaned it and took it out and shot a few patterns at various ranges, I agree to try and keep shots under 25yd but I think it will work perfectly for what I have in mind for it, man that thing is crazy fun to shoot!

Got a "Ranger" branded Stevens 315 SXS double. Given to me when I was around 8 years old. Owner had a set of 4 for skeet in 12,20,28 and .410. His wife only gave me the .410. Grandma would give me money to buy a box of shells and shoot pigeons from which she made pigeon pie. Hope my grandkids might want it some day. Got some photos of my granddaughter today from a biathalon
for beginners with pellet guns. Her mom says she went 5 for 5 on the last target. Gramps is pretty impressed.
