590A1 - Why the wait?

Someone on one of these threads mentioned a good metal replacement for the plastic moss 500/590 trigger group, anyone know who carries them? Thanks!

really is no point to do this, with a quality gun like the Remington, benelli, Mossberg, the "plastic" TG is not just plastic as with think of it, its High impact polycarbonate.
the Remington one is 5 times stronger then the cast aluminum one, i,m sure its the same with the Mossberg.
bbb

I have heard of the Mossberg unit breaking more than a few times however, and from extended operation of the gun and not just impact.

^^^ slim chance of it happening, but the tabs on the front of the trigger group are a weak point in that they can sheer off with long hard use , it's not some thing that happens offen , I've only heard of it once.
Having said that I have a 590 that I got in the late "80's" that still doing fine with its "plastic" trigger group.

Don't even bother getting an Express.

Get a used Wingmaster receiver or full shotgun on the EE. Cut barrel to 18.5'' or trade + cash for a Dominion Arms or NEA 12.5'' or 14'' or OEM 18.5 or 20''.

Go to S&J Hardware and upgrade as desired.

If you want to swap stocks out, you got the choice of Magpul, Hogue, Speedfeed. I have the Speedfeed I set and it serves me well. It came on the Wingmaster I picked up off the EE

No need to have the gun refinished. Just run her hard and put some wear marks on her and give it that worn look.

I think you can get this all done for about $500 if you buy used on the EE.

x2 I did exactly this, grabbed an old 50's wingmaster and customized as desired.
I also have a 590A1 and although it's a great shotgun, I prefer my wingmaster.

Well, I finally found one. After a tedious wait, through random chance, I found one in Milarm, downtown Edmonton.

I knew they had lots of the wall there, but I've been waiting specifically for this model. I thought it the best bang for the buck. When the young lady brought it to me, I have to say, I was unimpressed.

The first thing I noticed when I shouldered the gun and racked it, were the two rails protruding on the fore end. Someone mentioned how heavy recoil could hurt/cut your hand, and I see how. I plan on shooting heavy loads, slugs etc, so its not something I wanted to deal with. I could have likely taken them off, but whats the point in paying for something you're not going to use.

Next we played around a bit with the speed feed stock. I kinda like the idea of having extra rounds, so if out IE bird hunting, and you come across a bear, you could retrieve a slug or two stored in the stock quite easy. However the young lady at the counter brought up a box of ammo to try the stock, and it seems quite cheap. One round would fit ok, the second required a lot of force to put it in. And when they were in, the shells were only kept there be a small slot in the plastic stock. I'm thinking (no experience here) that real heavy recoil could dislodge the shells from the grove, and the shells would go shooting out onto the ground.

The rest of the gun was fine; I liked the ghost sights, the way it fit me, the firm action of racking it. Wasn't crazy about the 'Blackwater' Emblem on the side either. But before I ordered this gun, I was not able to hold this exact model. I did handle a base 18.5" barrel model, and in doing the math, it seemed like the blackwater was the best bang for you buck, since it had all the rails, speed stock, mag extender, and of course, the logo. To buy these separately would have cost way more if you bought a basic model and added them to it. Therefore, I was going on assumptions when I placed the order.

I figured while I was there, and in a disappointed mood, I figured I'd look at the few on the wall. There, they had a another 590a1, 20 inch barrel, mag extender and ghost ring sights. No speed stock, and a regular police grip fore end. She let me hold it, and when I inquired about price, she said that one model was actually on sale....

SOLD

So that's it.

I had planned on dressing it all up with a rail, maybe a laser, light, something else probably. But now that I have it, I think its beauty is in its simplicity.

I plan on using this as my everything gun. The gun that goes behind the seat in the truck on trips to camp, sits in the bottom of the boat when camping, strapped to a day pack and mounted to the quad for trips down to the trap line. It'll see abuse with skeets (albeit only so effective with a shorter barrel), and will happily occupy closet space for home defense.

So far, I'm happy. I got a GREAT deal on it. Will clean it over once good, and take it out to an empty field somewhere tomorrow to give it a shakedown.

Thanks to the young lady at Milarm for the great customer service as well. Two thumbs up.

TXS...I've owned a few different config's of the 590/590A1's and the model you chose is one of the better ones IMO. Speedfeed stock, fore-grip rails, logos, etc., are added features that are better in design than function.
At 20" it gets a bit heavy fully loaded so you might want to keep it free of "junk". These are great SG's once broken in!

That said, I've been looking for a 590A1 18.5" Bead Sight(only) with non-speedfeed stock and a corncob fore-grip (#51411)......if anyone has seen one kicking around.

Had to throw in some Zombie Love.

Nice shotty... how did it perform? May I ask how much you paid for this? Is it the 590 Special Purpose?

This is the configuration I'd like too, don't need all the fancy doodads.

Wholesale Sports lists a 20" 590 Special Purpose and a 18.5" 590A1 (in stock). IIRC both with GRS.
I also like my SG's without a lot of "stuff" hanging off it.....

Canada Post should be dropping off my new 590A1 SP today. 20" barrel, 8+1. Ghost ring and front blade sights.
I had to get the speedfeed stock which cost a bit more, because thats was the only one with the sights and barrel, and capacity I wanted. (Did not want the Blackwater) Sucks though cause I will likely replace the stock anyways.

I almost got that one, but that is not the A1 model and does not have the parkerized or heavy walled barrel. Those were features I wanted with this gun.

TSX's appears to be the 590A1 from a few years back that came with out the speedfeed stock. Hense the sale/clear out price by the retailer.
Main sign being the parkerized barrel, with the silver solder under the front sight and attaching the mag tube to the barrel.

If you want one, get it now! These will not last.
It appears a few retailers just got stock from Mossberg in March at the same time. The 590 is in huge demand.

I'm confused, which 590A1 model did the OP buy, with a link? I want the parkerized and heavy walled barrel, but the speedfeed stock and that other stuff I don't really want.

What's "that other stuff"?
I just bought the 20 inch parkerized, heavy barrel with the speedfeed stock. Model# 51668. It does not have any rails and has just the simple corncob forend. Only other extra is the ghost ring. No top rail either. Pretty simple model.

You have to research model numbers because they are more exact. The model names aren't as well categorized.

The one you may be after is model #51660.
Parkerized heavy 20 inch barrel
Regular synthetic stock
Bead sight.

These are not avail anywhere that I've seen.

Sometimes you got to grab the 590 that you come across, cause they go FAST!
