590A1 - Why the wait?

Canada Post should be dropping off my new 590A1 SP today. 20" barrel, 8+1. Ghost ring and front blade sights.
I had to get the speedfeed stock which cost a bit more, because thats was the only one with the sights and barrel, and capacity I wanted. (Did not want the Blackwater) Sucks though cause I will likely replace the stock anyways.

What's "that other stuff"?
I just bought the 20 inch parkerized, heavy barrel with the speedfeed stock. Model# 51668. It does not have any rails and has just the simple corncob forend. Only other extra is the ghost ring. No top rail either. Pretty simple model.

Now I'm confused…EL34/6L6 did you buy a 590A1 Special Purpose (SP) Model#51668?
I never seen a 590A1 Special Purpose but know of a 590 Special Purpose (without the metal trigger guard & safety and no heavy walled bbl). Be sure to post a pic when you gets yours.

Edit: I think I have it sorted it out. A 590A1 SP is a Special Purpose because it has a speed feed stock. Mossberg's number and naming convention is so confusing if you don't stay on top of it.

Thanks, was planning on Magpuling it, but I actually like the factory config. and sheer simple brute force look that it gives off.

Fresh out of the box.

How much did you pay for your 590 A1 Special Purpose #51668 and where did you get it? It's listed as $763 US retail price...

Is this where you got it ($659 @ site sponsor)?

It is confusing. 590 and the 590A1 are different models/subsets. The 590A1's have heavy walled barrels, metal trigger guards and safeties (if I am reading correctly). Lots of different upgrades for them as well.

Keep it looking As Is! Use the $$ to buy ammo and have Casey (@ TacOrd) do the VCS mod. Shoots tight 12"-15" groups with 00Buck @ 25yrds. I'll posts some pics of Casey's work this wknd.
Too bad you had to order the Speedfeed stock....they never worked that great on my Mossbergs. (Shells falling out during "aggressive drills", etc.)

Yes! Newly in stock as of 3/26/14 I believe. Could only find the 18.5 locally, but even though it was cheaper, it did not have the bayo lug or 8+1. I could not find a 20" anywhere in stock that didn't have a pistol grip and rails eveywhere. I wanted a big, long heavy tactical shotgun with straightforward features and this is it.

None get the Hogue short LOP. :)
I can see the Magpul advantage for increased LOP as well, to 14". But the speedfeed is already 13.5" anyways. The Magpul forend is also really comfortable, except this is my first corncob and have always wanted one. Simple and effective.
I also personally feel the Magpul looks......off/odd on the Mossberg's. Something about the lines. The 870 looks better with the SGA and MOE. I also don't think I want this gun looking super modern, and the Magpul does that to a gun.

Yeah, just had to get what I could. It had 90% of the features I wanted so I wasn't going to waiver on my decision any longer because of that one minor aspect. The stock itself feels good, and the cost for the speedfeed was an extra $30-40 from what I can gather elsewhere online. No biggie, just glad I got it.
Post the VCS stuff when you can.

Nice shotty... how did it perform? May I ask how much you paid for this? Is it the 590 Special Purpose?

This is the configuration I'd like too, don't need all the fancy doodads.

Mine is the A1 model, not the regular 590 SP.

$515 before tax at Milarm in Edmonton. Happened to be a model they marked on special. No dings dents or scratches, unfired, right outta the box.

I concur. Original plan was to add all the do dads, but there is beauty in its simplicity. May add a ring and flashlight to the muzzle end eventually, but that'll likely be all. Thought about the magpul, still unsure. Might have to shoulder one to find out, but the stock setup works so damn well, why mess with it.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Magpul stock and forend. When I get an 870 that's what it'll wear.
Not this A1 though. Kind like a jeans and T-shirt, meat and potatoes look with this one. All killer, no filler.

Blackwater at my local CT too, $649. Has the AR type stock though and receiver/forend rails which I didn't want. Not to mention the decal....

Anyone notice that 590 spells "Top" on the keyboard?
Which also coincides with the meaning of "A1".
TOPA1.
Sneaky buggers....

Good deal bro. Wholesale Sports has the 18.5" 590A1 for $499. If I can find a deal like you got on yours, I'd buy one. Milarm's website is awful, just lists the stock without any online shopping possible.

18.5 is nice, I almost got one myself.
Shorter length, less capacity, and no bayo mount. Only differences really.
I knew I would end up getting the $100 +2 extension from S&J so I passed. May get a M7/9 bayo one day too, so I held out for the 20".

Been looking for a Mossberg 590A1 18.5" Bead sight(only) sans Speedfeed stock with a mag tube extension for the longest time. Can't seem to find only anywhere!
It would fill the void between the 18.5" JICII/Raptor Grip and the 20" 590A1 VCS with GRS…..

Get the M7…better for sticking things

Does a 'ported barrel' greatly reduce felt recoil? I see it's included on the SPX 590 & 590A1 models.

Hickok45 has something to say on the Mossy 590A1's as well:

I've done a bit of research on this. The idea isn't to reduce recoil, its to redirect the gasses to reduce muzzle jump, so you can keep your point of aim better. I lot of what I've read states it really a waste of time, and makes not measureable difference. Its a 'tacticool' item I suppose.

I'm with EL64/6L6, bare bones, meat and potatoes, get the job done and doesn't need make up on to do it :p

Ok…here are some pics….590A1 20"bbl Ghost Ring sights, Vang Comp Systems mod (back bore, forcing cone and porting) by TacOrd, follower and over-sized safety switch.

Wow, quite the dynamic duo there man! Got me thinking about an 18.5 now! Lol. Nah I've bought two tactical shotguns this week so I done for a while.
I'll be getting an oversized safety though, one a little different than yours, either the one with the tall centre ridge or the wide button shaped one.
