DPMS GII Recon,

Just changed out the buffer tube with a PWS enhanced tube. The stock and tube that comes with the rifle is commercial not milspec. This is a nice improvement as the commercial stock has a bit of a rattle. For now, there is a CTR on it which Epoxy7 will eventually replace with a B5 in FDE and ergo grip.

Very nice forge upper/lower 7075. The bolt is also a huge step forward for DPMS and is one of the nicer of theirs that I've had my hands on.
The hand guard is a bit too heavy. Hopefully Noveske will make a NSR for this Rifle. The trigger is pretty good 2 stage.

The rifle handled a little heavier than my sons Stag carbine.

The buffer tube was a pain to remove. Used a blow torch to loosen the loctite.

Epoxy7's rifle:

Hey Fireball,

thanks for the help. That buffer tube wasn't coming off.

For those looking at the new GII DPMS it's a significantly better rifle than their previous 308 rifles. While the furniture on it is OK, they should have gone milspec with the buffer tube. In my case it doesn't matter but for others it's nice to have the milspec for ease of finding other stocks if you want to change it up.

The front handguard I sort of like but it could be a bit thinner and lighter for a Recon rifle. Also quick release points would be nice. I'm looking at the new MI rail or Noveske if they end up making a NSR for this rifle as a future change.

The buffer appears to be AR15 while the spring looks more AR10. Which makes me wonder if a Spike buffer could be used which should help give a slightly smoother recoil (haven't shot it yet).

From the initial inspection I'm pretty impressed with this new rifle. It appears to be exactly what I hoped for. Final proof of course will be how it shoots.

Very nice looking rifle! Been fascinated by the GII ever since it was announced!

I thought I read the new GII could use a wider array of AR15 handguards because the receiver rail is the same height, I wonder if the barrel nut threads are the same? Would be very cool if the Noveske NSR was a drop-in component.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the GII as the new "it rifle" state side for hunting this fall, based on its size and weight.

It's a crying shame we can't hunt with it up here.

From what I've read the barrel nut is different. MI has just made a handguard for the GII. DPMS posted they've given out the details and third parties will be able to modify theirs so it will work. So no not a drop in yet still requires a bit of modification.

The charging handle is also a propriety length so no Raptor for now. It appears the Norgon ambi mag release will work but I haven't confirmed this yet. Also buffer and buffer spring are said to be propriety as well although the buffer tube is 100% AR15.

1:10 twist 308 SS barrel that's bead blasted and has the AAC flashider. Kind of wish they went with the brakeout ie one chamber for brake then flash hider. But it's a nice flash hider which is in demand.

I'm impressed with the size and weight of the forgings along with the nice lines. I really like the bolt. I was never impressed with the previous DPMS 308 BCG. I like the barrel and flash hider as well. The furniture is a matter of taste and it is OK out of the box. However the furniture can be improved. PWS buffer tube is a recommended addition.

Absolutely. I suspect you'll see these showing up in carbine competitions as it now opens the door wide open for 308 carbines. Previously you had to make a lot more compromises to lose the weight and frankly the KAC 16" was the rifle. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the DPMS is as nice as it's not but it's still pretty good and the cost for a 308AR is fairly reasonable. My LMT with the 16" barrel could be used but they are heavy and besides I like that rifle best with the 20" SS barrel. Plus the LMT isn't inexpensive. Even with the super sale on now a 16" with CL barrel is $2800 (that's a smoking deal). But still almost $1000 more than the DPMS with SS 16" barrel. A thinner lighter rail on the Recon and it will be one heck of a nice 308AR carbine.

That's too bad but not surprising at all that the barrel nut is different, It'll be really interesting to see some guys coming out with better rails for it; as you were saying a longer Noveske rail would look sweet on that!

There is a .308 Raptor charging handle, so hopefully they will release one for the GII if it's popular enough!

Might be looking to pick one of these guys up sometime :D

Finally received my g2 recon as well from Irunguns.
Quality is much improved over the older dpms', just a little wiggle between upper and lower, not a lot like their usual products.
It really does feel like a 223 ar15 in terms of ergos and weight.
Pretty much makes an spr style 223 ar build obsolete.

Terrible conditions today, wind was in the 20-60 kmhr range and gusty. Was hard to hold a point of aim.
But I had to try it out, ran my typical lmt mws loads through it.
44 grains of varget and 168 Amax
42.8 grains of varget and 178 Amax
47 grains of varget and 110 vmax
Saddle bag for the forearm and bean bag on the stock, prone, 100 meters.

Very promising indeed, I'm excited to start load development.
Recoil with the Pws brake and 110 grain vmax was very similar to a 223 ar with a standard flash hider.

ntm,

Glad to see you have yours! Didn't waste any time. Handguard and flash hider already changed up. Which scopeis that? I'm still waiting for my "source" to come back with the wholesale price for that scope we talked about. That and I'm thinking the MI in 12" keymod will go on mine. Work in progress. I have some Lapua 167 ammo to try. That round was the ticket for my gen1 LR308.

Looking good. Looking forward to getting mine to the range.

I dont have the experience you guys have versus the AR-10 but as another one to buy to go along my AR-10T, i have 2 canditates, the G2 Recon and the KAC SR-25, i will make a lot of reading before ordering one of the two, it is good to have peoples who are gurus on this board... My Armalite is derived from advices i got here... JP.

That's a meopta 1-4 zd. Nice glass.
I did try some 167 lapua I had previously loaded for the mws, it didn't look as good as the hornady stuff, but of course it wasn't charged specifically for the recon.

The recon is a big step forward in that it's light and compact (this would be the ultimate hunting rifle).
The sr25 is bulkier and heavier, but it exudes quality, much like the lmt mws does.
If only lmt or kac made a 308 ar based on the dpms design !
I'd go with the recon again personally, it shoots, and is easier to use as a carbine vs. any other 308 ar's I've used. If I had to trust my life to a rifle though, I'd take the sr25 ecc.

The 167 Lapua my LR308 loves is the factory off the shelf ammo. The specs are a fair amount faster than Federal gold which is roughly 43 grains of Varget for a gold metal clone load. 175 SMK with 43.4 varget is my goto load. So may need a higher velocity powder to safely mimick the Lapua match load.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. Afordable alternative to SR25 16" carbine yet in some ways better. So far although I haven't shot mine yet I'm happy with my choice. Some minor changes and it will be excellent.

Quality wise I really do like my LMT rifles and considering I suspect LMT and KAC are practically the same company... Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Mazda/Infiniti LMT/KAC? Not a huge fan of the KAC rollmark but realistically the only negative is the price. I just can't justify the cost of KAC. Especially with the bargains I got on my LMT rifles. Plus although not as refined or fancy my Armalite work horses are a great bargain in comparison.

This new DPMS GII has really been a big surprise. The GI stuff was ok for a target rifle but very outclassed by pretty much everything else quality wise. The Armalite price and built quality made it an easy choice over the GI. With the GII though it would be a tougher choice. For a target rifle I would likely still go Armalite though but for a 16" carbine the GII really is a home run.

Ntm what do you think of the trigger on your Recon? I was pleasantly surprised with mine. Not Gisele but pretty decent unlike the stock piece of crap trigger on my LR308 which I replaced right away.

Yes, very good. Nice double stage with a crisp break. If it was just a touch lighter, it'd actually make replacement with a geissele ssa-e pointless.
The reset was a little too long for my tastes, so I replaced it with a geissele s3g. I plan to use this thing for three gun, just for giggles. 110 vmax at 3100 fps makes those plates move !

Sounds like fun. I just added some grease to the trigger that came witha Swiss Arms I once owned. Some dry firing and it's good for my purposes. My LMT trigger is slightly better but not by much. The trigger that came with my DPMS LR308 target rifle in comparison was a single stage stock milspec trigger that was not only heavy but crunched when squeezed. I changed it before firing a shot out of that rifle. It was so bad DPMS should have been embarassed. $200 later for a new trigger and the rifle was the way it should have been.

One issue I did have though is the DPMS mag that came with the Reconis too snug to fit properly. The KAC mag that came with the LMT fits perfect. I need to get some pmags to hold me over until Wolverine comes out with the 10 round pistol mags. I'll use the poor fitting mag with my LR308 which it does fit.

GII is an interesting step towards the continued mass market of AR 308s but it still suffers from the same negative point as all other AR in 308 in Canada which is 5 round mags.

Whatever you're smoking, I want some.

He is correct, they are tied together at some level.

Xcr-m pistol mags on the horizon.
The real tragedy is that you can't hunt with 308 ar's...

True that a Recon cost less than 50% of a KAC SR25, this is something to consider if performance is close to par... JP.
