Really? The end of cheap SKS's?

Victor Bout may have some Soviet Era weapons stashed away now that the U.S. authorities have him in custody.....he was the former Russian / Soviet Military Officer turned black International Arms Dealer that the movie "Lord of War " with Nick Cage was based on.......but as often happens , he flew too close to the sun and got caught .As they say in regards to the U.S. , do not tug on Supermans Cape.......

seeing as how this thread has a lot of knowledgeable people on sks' i've got a quick question.

my friend purchased an sks (1950 izzy laminate) a few days ago and upon taking it out to fire today we noticed that the mag sits a little funny and it will not cycle rounds into the chamber. when he pulls the bolt back and releases, the bullet slams into the front of the chamber about 90% of the time. it's almost like the feed lips or whatever (not very knowledgeable on technical parts of gun) are not guiding the bullet into the chamber correct. sometimes it will work and then upon firing it will guide another bullet into the chamber face so hard that it pushes the bullet back into the shell casing. just wondering if this is commonly heard of on sks' or if this is an easy fix? the rifle doesn't even look like it was used and is in pretty nice shape. thanks guys didnt want to start a new thread.

Might be the magazine pin. Some of the "Westrifle" pins are too tight and the follower will not tilt.

This is a known problem. Thankfully, Westrifle has gone back to using rivets. Not all magazines are affected, but a larger than acceptable number are. I don't believe there is a reliable fix. I also have a 1950 from Canadian Tire with a stiff follower pivot point. They may loosen up with time, but in your case, I would return the rifle or magazine. Any magazine limiter that affects the mechanical function of a magazine is not a good idea, and counter-productive. If you keep the SKS, you can always purchase a 5/20-round Tapco magazine, and keep the original as a paper weight. Alternatively, you can buy somebody's frankenpinned magazine, swap out the follower arm/follower, and add your own rivet at the bottom of the magazine.

Is he using the stock mag or an aftermarket hi capacity pinned mag. These are notorious for this happening. On the stock mags, if they are not properly seated and locked in it the gun can look assembled but will not work properly. On a side note there is no such thing as a 50 "Izzy". Izhevsk SKSs were only made 53/54. Your friends is a Tula. Cheers

Thanks! Nothing is obvious when it comes to sources of surplus red rifles. I assume Ukraine, but you never know.

Actually you can often tell from the refurb marks, mine have stamps indicating they were in a Ukrainian arsenal at one point and appear unissued since. Ergo it would seem logical to assume they came from the land of painted eggs...

My rifle from Westrifle had this same problem when loading the last 2 rounds. The problem I saw, was that the limiting pin attached to the follower wasn't allowing the follower to follow up at the right angle. I took the mag out, and filed about 1mm of material from the follower pin where the ledge on the pin meets the follower with a slim metal file. Works perfectly now, every time. It took about a minuet once I found my file, and leaves no noticeable marks, as the pin already has been ground down to fit the pin to the follower. If they had only ground the pin down a little bit more, this would be the perfect pinning method.

I would agree the rivet through the bottom of the mag. does seem to work best . I was looking at an SKS at Canadian Tire the other day that I was thinking of buying to keep my other SKSs company ; .....but it did not have the bottom mag rivet like I prefer , plus some of the bluing had been touched up with black paint , so I passed . There seems to be quite a difference in the quality among SKSs , what looks good at a distance does not always look quite as good up close......

Sounds too easy. Can you photograph your "fix"?
