This is VERY interesting. Feel free to post any more stories about your life in Russia as a child and shooting.

I know that Russians took shooting sports very seriously back in the post war-80s until the USSR collapsed. Do you know if they still take their shooting seriously? I also recall how well they did in the Olympic shooting disciplines back in those years.

The thing about Russian target rifles and pistols is that they do not possess the fine finish that Western guns do but the internals are designed and worked on to be practical and precision. When it comes right down to it, who cares what the outside cosmetics are like so long as the thing can group right? :)

I also have one of the Vostok pistols in the wooden case with all the accessories including the palm rest shelf. As well I have the more elaborate free pistol than the 35 usually seen. Cannot recall model numbers without checking. Got these in excellent used condition from a dealer in Mtl who said they came from a guy who was a competitive shooter and bought them from a Russian shooter at the '76 Olympics.

The guy on here that had that mint MU12 for sale also told me that he bought it from a Russian team member at the '76 Olympics in Mtl. He said it was common back then for Russian shooters to bring along extra guns and sell them to help finance their trip.

We should start a thread about these Russian target rifles ! ( Not me cauz my english is not really good )
There is not alot of them around so we should gather what we have and share it to other people.
Maybe some guys like EugeneLED will come out with other cool stories.

Hard to believe in that , guns ownership back in USSR was soooooo strict , even cartridges were on count , if you sell weapon its 10+ years jailtime guaranteed . Cannot imagine how olympian can sell their own tools , each guy was a red army officer plus KGB supervisor on each 5 people .

Exquisite!!! if you paid any less than 850, you stole it, and be happy!!! REALLY REALLY Happy.

Similar to the Walther 'Running Boar' Rifles. Congrats, if it shoots as good as it looks, a keeper for sure.

Post some groups when you have time.

Very Nice Rifle Benny!

BTW: When Olympic shooting sports used to be more numerous and varied, running boar used to be a centerfire rifle event.
At the Mexico City games, two predominant rifles were often in the winner's circle; the Anschutz 1730(?) in 22 Hornet & the Remington 760 in 222 Remington.
According to Colonel Crossman's book.

One of the better shooting/coaching videos I have seen on youtube, was a 1980ish Russian made film regarding the stance/position of 50 meter pistol shooters.

just info

Very interesting!

Thanks for clarifying. I am dumb when it comes to Russian history.

Thanks for posting that old advertising.

I have the MU-23 free pistol with case and accoutrements along with a cased MU-1 with accoutrements.

My rifle is unlike the ones pictured. I believe it is a Vostok, but am too lazy to dig it out from the back of the safe to see. It has a very long and heavy barrel with a front sight similar to the one on your rifle. The stock is different from both of the ones in the advertising though.

Ruko was the Canadian importer during the 70s and 80s as I recall and I have some of their old advertising. Interesting to look back on that stuff. I actually have used it as reference. I still say those were the halcyon days of firearms, especially the 80s for handguns....all sorts of manufacturers around the world that made quality stuff.

Gun ownership was very two tiered in the old USSR.
Knew a air force officer who when retired from military service, got to keep his issued Makarov.
Of course he had to keep it loaded/poorly hidden in the linen closet. His drunken half sister who was a once Olympian pistol shooter hopeful, just had to steal it from her half brother.
Her useless/lazy teenage son, became angry when his GF dumped him. He used the twice stole Makarov to blow her head off!

^A true USSR crime story.

Last week I took the rifle to the range, just to sight the Tula.
I had not shot with peep sights for more than a year.

I tried some SK rifle match and...

This thing shoots like a laser ! And also much better than me.
The trigger is outstanding and I must admit the rifle is really easy to shoot.

I'm sure a good peep sight shooter can do the half inch challenge with it.

Can't wait to have more time to return to the range with this rifle and test ammo.

3X 5 rounds groups, I think its not bad...
Now I need to make appropriate sized targets.

Yesterday, I spent more trigger time behind the Tula and I tested different ammo.
I must admit that the more I use this rifle, the more I enjoy it !
I definetly need to find more inserts for the front sight.

Like I said, I'm not a very good peep sight shooter but I'm very happy with the result !.

The last brand tested was the Fiocchi M320 Match and I think the bore needed cleaning at the end.
I should give them another try next time I go to the range.

Accuracy from the 4 brands tested :

1- SK Rifle Match
2- RWS Club
3- SK Standard Plus
4- Fiocchi M320 Match
