10/22 Tips & Tricks

http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Resources/Articles/Bedding+the+Ruger+1022.html

This is an interesting tutorial I found on improving a stock 10/22's accuracy with minimal investment.

Basically upgrading the trigger and bedding it in the factory stock (and doing that screw thing in the trigger group pin hole)

thinking of trying this but hesitant to tapping out that hole.

This is NOT the best way to bed a 10/22 !

Radical and complicated -

There is MUCH info on U.S sites to show the proper and best way to wring out ALL the accuracy capable from the platform.

Having said that -I will try it and compare to the tried and true -

If only to prove this as bunk -
Who knows ? I might be pleasantly surprised (doubt it - I accomplished what is proposed in the article by thin sheet brass many years ago)

Hey Guys I have a question about the SR22...to change out the rear stock do you look for a Milspec tube and stock or Commercial? what is the difference?

Thanks

Thats the first thing i changed on my sr22 was that cheap ass loose stock. Just threw an old fab butt i had laying around on it. Fits, feels and looks better. Any milspec butt should pop right on there

Anyone ever see a mag for a SR-22 that looks a bit more AR'ish? I see the Mossberg tactical has one . . . anyone have pics of their own mods to make an AR style mag for the SR-22?
Thanks

I know the following may be a dumb sounding question but what does this do and how is it beneficial?

On the left is a stock (factory) bolt release.
On the right is a Auto bolt release.
To make your own auto bolt release simply use a small file or dremel and remove excess material so that your bolt release ends up looking like the one to the right.

***Note***
To ensure proper function of the auto bolt release, you do NOT want the top of your hole to be filed flat. Again, you want your auto bolt release to ressemble the one to the right.

Yes Promag 9-22 mags are available. The standard 9-22 mag looks like the MP5 mag and you can get the shells for them and then they look like an AR mag. Ive got 4 of them and they look great on my SR22.

It allows you to release the bolt hold open lock by just pulling back on the charging handle and then releasing it instead of having to toggle the button and pull back at the same time. you still must toggle to hold open the bolt but makes it nicer to release it anyways.

hey ive got a quick stupid question, would ordering these mag couplers from the states be a bad idea as far as restrictions?

thanks

How do you remove the stock barrel? I removed the screws and the v block but the barrel is really on there! without using a vise and a monkey wrench is there an easy way of doing this?

Try repeatedly pulling the bolt back and let it slam into the barrel. Once it starts moving out of the receiver, grab the barrel and keep trying to twist it left to right.

Just one more question for now,
I am using a hogue synthetic stock is glass bedding required? Should I just bed the back of the action and use the existing bed in front as the piller?
Make that two questions
Some of the articles suggest bedding 2" in front of the action and some say to free float the entire barrel from the action forward, what would be recommended ?

Why would it be a bad idea? The Butler Creek 25 rd mags come from the factory ready to clip two together. If you can make a 50 rd, I don't see why there would be an issue making a 40 rounder. I wouldn't, but you can.

i was asking more about whether it would be worth it at all seeing as its from the states what with customs etc.. thanks though

Can anyone tell me where in Canada I could find a Volquartsen extractor kit? Every site I find that carries them is a US site and they wont ship to Canada.

EDIT: Nevermind. I found a place

DIY Extended Mag Release

I was about to throw down my hard earned bucks on a $16 mag release when I realized that since birth I had this gift where I could pretty much MacGyver the hell out of anything mechanical. So... I decided to have at her and now you can too.

STEP 1 Gather up some supplies.

You will need your factory mag release, a piece of aluminum angle about 1/16" thick and cut to 7/16" wide, a 6-32 countersunk screw, a tap and the required drill bit, locktite, JB weld, epoxy and some black paint.

Step 2 Align and drill through both your pieces, use the tap on the factory mag release. Bore out the hole on the aluminum angle and countersink it where the head will go. Screw both pieces together tightly keeping them aligned and make sure you use locktite.

Step 3 Rough up the components with sandpaper and JB weld everything, especially the seams. After the JB weld cures, sand it smooth and even everything out so the components start looking like one seamless part. I used a dremel with a smooth sanding stone to do all this. Regular sandpaper will take too much off. Test fit the part before proceeding.

Step 4 Now that you have your desired shape its time to dip it in epoxy, this will further give it more volume and make it seem like one seamless part. The best stuff to use would be tooling epoxy but just about any off the shelf epoxy will do. Let this cure over night.

Step 5 With the epoxy set, now you can sand it smooth and dip the part in paint or spray paint it. Make sure you test fit the part again and check operation of the mag release before painting.

Couple Notes:

For operation with the factory rotary magazine you will need to trim off the thumb tab on the magazine itself or else this will wedge up against it when you're trying to take your mag off. I did this to mine with a dremel and now the magazine just falls out when I push on the mag release. It works great!

Another thing to note is that if you have to go out and buy all the supplies then you might as well buy the darn part to begin with since it will cost you less. I did this because I already had all this stuff at home.

Well there ya have it ladies and gents. Have fun and play safe.

If you rotated that piece of angle 180 deg you wouldn't have to remove the tab on the magazine;) You can also just drill and tap and screw whatever you want on there.

I have big hands so I wanted as much clearance in there as possible, no big deal to shave it off anyway. Next project will be to make an extended magazine shroud for the factory mag so this piece was going to be in the way anyway.

I also wanted it to look like a store bought one, I was about to screw in a piece of round tubing but decided eh, what the heck, and went to town on er.
