I am looking to purchase a 17 wsm, ruger sells one model only 77/17 and get this $1000, right, savage starts at $450 and up depending on what features you want which is fine if you can find one.
Winchester came out with this rimfire cartridge 6 years ago.
Have the following rimfire manufactures fallen asleep or what?

winchester
remington/marlin
cz
henry
chiappa
browning
zastava
tikka
mossberg

Aren't there already 4 calibers that do basically the exact same thing?

Can’t that be said about every cartridge available today?

I don’t think the WSM is really catching on. It’s not exactly inexpensive, and the rifles available are either crap (B-Mag), over $1000 or simply not available in Canada.

I got a 77/17. Like it, it is a well built, feels like a big game rifle.. Accurate enough to take g-hogs out to 200yds. If you can get one it is worth

Do not buy the cheap savage with the plastic junk stock! They shoot absolutely awful. I had one for a very short time and ended up basically giving it away. However the Heavy barrelled stainless with the thumbhole laminate stock is an accurate rifle that's worth owning IMO. Mine shoots around 5/8th inch groups at one hundred and easily kills crows ,quite dramatically, out to 200yds and beyond depending on wind. Louder than the HMR and more on the payout for ammo but still a cool piece to own.

I bought a Ruger 77/17 and it was crap. I changed the trigger, bedded it, crowned it and still was plagued with first shot flyers 1.5" away from the group at 50 yards. I put it in the safe and bought a Savage Bmag.....most ridiculous action design ever, seriously what the heck were they thinking. The Bmag outshot the Ruger easily. I ended up putting Boyds pro varmint stocks on both rifles and the Ruger got a .920" straight Lilja barrel. Now the Ruger is a solid 3/4" gun at 100, but it took a pile of money to get there. The plus side is the action is normal, the trigger is a 1lb and awesome (Jard) and it is very accurate. The Savage shoots okay, but nowhere near what the Ruger does, but it cost about one quarter what I have into the Ruger.

I think the caliber was plagued by the accuracy reports, and first gun(s?) that came out chambered in it. Savage B-Mag was the first if memory serves, but I may have that wrong. I do believe that some people really have the blinders on when rimfire ammo creeps over $20 a box, and, there are loads of people with no desire for .17 caliber ANYthing. lol I rarely use HMR unless it's for gophers out west, and I opted for a 17 Hornet for groundhogs. Better quality ammo, and I can hand load and really tighten things up. No point in rolling the dice on a 17 WSM, and no desire to "make it shoot" well by dumping lots of $ into it.

There was an interesting article on this by Lee J. Hoots in the March/19 issue of Rifle.
FWIW I had a light barrel Bmag in the plastic stock and was plagued by fliers. I tried a Boyd's laminate and it improved the handling but not the accuracy. I sold it and bought the stainless heavy barrel version and it will hold 5 right at an inch with Winchester 20 gr.
To my knowledge there is Savage, Ruger and the Winchester low wall available in Canada. Volquartsen and Jard rifles also make rifles.
I recently bought a case of Winchester ammo at a local gun show for $140 for 10 boxes, not a horrible price.
Regardless of who's name is on the ammo I believe it's Winchester making it.
I find it a good performer, I've owned other off the shelf rifles that were dogs too, not every one is a gem.

Wouldn’t bother with one. 17 hornet mo betta if you reload anyway
Your comparing centerfire to rimfire which is a whole different thing! If your into comparison and loading just get a 204 and the search for accuracy and speed with no recoil is over! Just my opinion and I hope ur actually making time to get out shooting. Cheers Chris

I wouldn't say my first gen B mag is a tack driver but good enough for groundhogs at 100 yds.
A little peeved that the ammo is more expensive and rarer than they said it was going to be.
I guess not enough people got on the bandwagon

Not a whole big improvement over the HMR. I think that is the biggest issue, and everyone makes an HMR.
You would really have to go out of your way to want one.

It seems pretty logical to compare it directly, to me.

You can buy a 17 Hornet and reload, or pay about the same for one time use ammo, which may or may not be around in a few years time. When you buy an orphan centerfire caliber, it at least is still useable, once the ammo is no longer made. See all the threads about looking for 5mm Magnum ammo. Then complaining about a buck a round, when you can actually find any.
