I shot my bull at 9:30am on Monday - within the first 3 minutes of arrival.

With the first shot missed, I followed with four more rounds and brought the bull down. I thought that was in 350-400 yards range. It turned out to be 503 yards on my GPS.

We think the bull must be over 1000 pound given that the six of us couldn’t move it an inch until we gutted it. We spent the rest of Monday moving it out of the marsh and hung it on a tree.

The second day we managed to move it 20 more yards in the swamp and decided to cut it up. Leaving the head behind we pulled the sled behind the ATV to take the body parts back up the hill to the truck. By the time we finished at the camp it was 7:30pm on the Tuesday.

BTW I was shooting a 308 with 165 gr TSX. Most shots ended in the heart and lug area including breaking it front leg. I don’t recall seeing any exist holes so I expect my partners to retrieve the bullets for me when they skin it late on.

Well I am ready for my deer hunt in two week.

I hear you, i shot one within the first hour of the season in Ontario a while back, took me a day and a half to get it out! Back pack out the quarters, then canoe ride, portage, another canoe ride......Anyhow congrats on the moose!!!

Just because you ask for it.

308 works if you know your rifle and the load.

Cheers!

Two thoughts:
1) Congratulations on a successful hunt- which WMU were you in?
2) The moose deserved better than you 'hail marying' bullets at it.

If you were a practiced long range shooter you would either have and use a rangefinder or know your distances, so its obvious from your story that you're not. Considering that your bullet dropped about 34 inches from where you thought the moose was (~375yds) to where it truly was (~503yds) you were lucky to be hitting anything regardless of how big the bull was.

If you want to shoot long distance, knock yourself out- its a great challenge to do well. Just put in the time and effort that is required beforehand to do it properly.

Nice shooting !!!!!!!!!

Congratz I hope it's tasty.

And now the hunting guru trolls are going to regale us with lessons of ethics, shot placement, gun selection and better ways to take a dump without splattering your shoes.

X2 what he said??

The fact that he hit the moose several times means he knows how to shoot.500 yards is quite doable and I don't think anyone here would like to stand in front of someone shooting at them at this range.I took a cow moose years ago at a range I won't repeat with a handloaded .270/130gr and hit her twice for two shots.Heart + lungs with bullet holes 3' apart.............if you know your gun all you need is a knife and a strong back.......Harold

The first 3 minutes of your arrival? It would seem that from that range you would have been able to actually HUNT a bit and get closer. Why in the world would you open up at that range immediately after you got out of the truck? I will not be one to pat you on the back for what you did. I hope you did not have your kids with you to teach them how to hunt.

I suspect the excitement of seeing the moose took over and the shot was taken in haste. Maybe more time to stock in for a closer shot would be wise for the next moose hunt. And buy a range finder. But that said nice moose.

We went to the marsh by boats through two lakes and hiked 2 km up the hill. Travel time is 2+ hours. Not as lucky as some of you that can hunt out of a truck.

I was hunting in WMU #54. I have a range finder but didn’t have it with me, neither was I expecting to shoot that distance (the long point in the marsh). It is obvious that I misjudge the distance as I noted with my first shoot. That was corrected with my subsequent shots. That was my decision to shoot and I made.

I practice 200-500 rounds at the 300 yard range yearly. Not as much last year but I am very comfortable shoot that distance.
