2013 Spring Turkey!!!

I have to say, this spring season is by far the easiest of my carrer, if i exclude preparation, walking time, seting up a while before, the actual hunting time for 2 birds from the first call or scratch and the kill, 20 minutes first bird, 15 minutes second bird, 2013 is a great year... JP.

Got to our hunt camp late on Sunday and only had time to set up in the field, 200 yards from camp during the last hour of shooting time. Didn't set up any decoys just pitched a small tent blind on a previously identified hot trail. Half hour later this Tom goes out for a stroll and walks broadside from my tent at a laser-range of 53 yards, weighed-in at 20 lbs even with a 6" beard and small, only 1/2" spurs. Four members at camp this year and three of us scored birds.

I got home from work Tues morning at 3:15 after work and decided to go out for a morning hunt, i was out sunday morning and watched the birds along a field and out along the fence line, got there about 5:30 am, heard them gobbling all over already as i walked up in the dark, as i sat up under a tree by the edge where they moved by on sunday, it was really foggy out, the dew was settling off the trees and dripping right on me like it was raining, and kept getting onto my glass pot and making it all messed up, was striking a few calls that i could on the dry spots of it and trying to make some good calls, heard the gobblers get closer, and seen them pop out into the field about 120 yrds out, and wander off into the fog of the field. Was getting more and more wet from the water off the trees, and was like ugh, about 30 min in i seen a nice turkey back in the bush, wandering around by its self, tryed to call, it came a bit closer and then turned to the gobblers and was gone. About 2 hrs had passed and i stared to see the early group of 7 turkeys wander back, so i made a couple clucks, they turned and started to walk twards me, i had my back to them and the tree, i turned and just watched as a hen came 15 yrds from me, the others were 50 yrds and closing, moved my gun slowly around, spotted one of the 4 birds toms in the group and took aim and dropped him, he fell on the spot, the others didnt know what hit him, sat there for a second or 2 and finally flew off as my tom twitched around all over. Loaded for a second(just in case shot), a min later, walked out and tagged and picked up the hefty bird. Walked him back the 472 yards to the car that i had got stuck in the mud when i arrived at the farmers field, tryed to get it out until the farmer came out with his tractor and gave me a pull. Showed him my prize and went home to 3hrs of sleep before work. Well worth it and cant wait to get out for my second of the season.

Congrats, my son and I leave tomorrow for Maine. We start hunting Monday, but momma wanted to do some shopping. Can't wait!

Lots of gobbles today until someone put their yappy dog outside. It barked at every call I made and the turkeys stopped gobbling.

I went out a few days ago with my father in law in Eastern Ontario (my first hunt!).

On the 25th I saw a tom come out from the woods and strutted around a bit. A hen followed him out and he lost interest and went back into the woods. He was around 60 yards. Oh well. I made friends with an owl that day. That was pretty cool.

Day two on the 26th. Got out in the field and there was nothing. Not a gobble or a bird in sight. Packed it in around 8:30. I jumped a deer on the way in.

Day three on the 27th. Went to a different hunting spot. Called a few birds and they responded. They didn't want to come though. Moved around a few times trying to chase them. I made a deer really mad. That was ok.

Day four on the 28th. Went out for a mid morning hunt. Lots of hens. No gobblers though.

The seasoned hunters had the same luck that I did. They just dont want to come this early in the season. I was told I am a pretty decent caller. Thats a plus I guess.

So that has been the story of my first ever hunting experience. I am a little let down by it but I guess thats hunting. Now that I am back home in Hamilton, I dont think I will have the time to go out to Eastern Ontario again. I really have no idea where to hunt down here. Any suggestions?

All my expense of licensing, clothing, a reliable shotgun, calls, etc have really added up and I would love to bag a bird. I am just at a loss of where. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would love to hear them.

I've been practicing 40 yard shots all last week and suprisingly enough that's exactly what was available to me on my first turkey hunt of the year on May 1st. 2 big Toms came in on my call from 150 yards out, right to my decoy. They split up just enough for me to take a shot at the bigger one. My first turkey ever!!!!! Shot at exactly 40 yards with Winchester 3" 1.75 ounce High Density shot out of a slug abrrel with a Briley choke! Btw Turkey was 22lbs, 10 inch beard, with just over a 1 inch spur. Not bad for my first!
