2016 "Ugly Gun of the Year" contribution.

I grew to sort of like it Supercub, but I probably couldn't resist painting it... Big surprise I'm sure

NO WAY I'd repaint that rifle !!

If I find one of those Sportsman 78's in .308 and have the dough on me at the time I'm buying it. Might even copy Supercub's paint scheme. I love the "it's a damn tool" irreverence of it.

Don't know about ugly but I'll enter this as a Rat Rod entry..........used it on my first African hunt. It's a Sako L61R in a Brown Precision glass stock in 300 WM and that is not a stainless barrel, I just sanded the bluing off cause it was too beat up.

PH said he'd much rather see a guy show up with a rifle that looked like that then a brand new Mark V without a scratch on it..........

I have another 78 here but it's a long action in 30-06. I like them cuz they are very smooth actions with the old Rem quality.

I hope my 14 year old nephew doesn't see this its his pride and joy
Around 1980 two brothers were goose hunting when one fell asleep in the blind the other brother thought it would be a funny joke to put a bulrush in the end anyway the joke backfired (literally) leaving the last 6" of barrel a mangled mess. The Win. 37A lingered in various closets until my nephew brought it to me. I shortened the barrel to 20" added a limbsaver then he gave it a rattle can job. Used it for a Ruffie gun in the forest this year.

In the spirit of boasting one's new wares here on CGN, I submit this 35 Whelen "Rat Gun" (ala Rat Rod). I think it runs a bit counter to all the pretty guns one sees on the interweb these days.

Built on a Remington Sportsman 78 ADL action (1980s M700 pre-SPS cheapo offering) with a new 23" Lilja 1:12" SS bbl in an old Brown Precision stock. This is the fourth rifle I've had that stock on starting with a used 7Mag that was re-tubed to 358NM by Bevan King. That 358 was sold to a friend who decided a McMillan was in order so the stock was sold back and was put on an 30/06 only to finally become this current 35 Whelen. (This has become my all time favourite stock over all others that I have owned. I wish I had a bunch more of them.) The butt was extended 1/2" to bring it up to 13.5" and given the BDL treatment. I started to refinish the stock at one point and found some yellow under and couple layers of brown and black paint. Kinda ugly, so I left it as-is. Scope is an old Vari-X III 2.5-8 complete with gloss finish, ring marks and friction adjustments < gasp  >. Paid a mere $150US for the scope, so it's cheap enough be a a part of this project. The Weaver R&B are uber FUDD and were a no brainer. I just hope I can get all this antiquated optics gear to work enough to place a bullet even remotely near a target. :)
Weighs 7.5lbs as shown and handles quite nicely.

Go ahead, tell me it's ugly and make my day. I like it! :dancingbanana:

That stock is just awesome, I love I worn out look but my OCD won't let me own one like that.

And the chambering......... well, the Whelen's just a cool cartridge.
