How have you Ontario guys been doing for the rifle hunt? A spike and a seven point just walked out in front of me as I was starting this thread, talk about timing lol. Needless to say 3 shots from my Swiss Arms later we have 2 deer down.

So far I've seen a cow moose it watched me for a good two minutes, flushed a deer only saw its rear end running away for a second or two, three turkey
and two does I could have easily harvested but alas only a buck tag this year. So lots of game around just no stinking bucks.

Quick question...this is my first ON controlled hunt so bare with me.

I have a controlled hunt validation tag. I also received an antlerless bows only tag but was not able to hunt in the bow season.

Can I use the upper portion of the bows only hunt seal (part labelled license) with the controlled hunt tag? Or do I need to buy a separate deer license since the one I have now (antlerless in bows only) came with the seal?

If you paid for the license then you’re done and by the sounds of it you did. That is the license.
. As long as you carry your controlled validation with you for the area you’re in you should be good. Buck only unless you’re party hunting on the controlled hunt with someone else with antlerless tags
The bow hunt goes on til dec 31st so lots of time left. You can also party hunt after using your tag if you’re with someone else with a tag.

As far as the hunt goes...so fiat terrible. It’s been raining for 3 days straight and seen nothing in wmu49 west of Algonquin

It's been raining, drizzling, misting and snowing plus there has been a howling wind for the last 3 days. I haven't seen a thing. The daughter saw a doe on the farm adjacent to the one we hunt but we can't hunt on that farm so she just waved at it. The fellow who owns the farm we hunt has seen 4 does but is holding out for one of the big bucks he has seen. This is Grey County.
The wind has really been something. At one point I came out of the cedar bush I was in to see if the loud roar was the wind in a ridge of hardwoods 400 meters off or a tornado it was that loud.

My controlled tag says antlered or antlerless though...

Sorry OP for the minor derail

Antlerless and Controlled are MWU specific. Did you apply for both in the same WMU (I assume most people would)? As long as they are the same you can shoot a doe or a buck in the controlled hunt and tag it with your seal. You CAN'T get an additional seal for the controlled hunt (unless additional seals are available - WMU specific) as you are only allowed one deer. If you are hunting a controlled hunt outside of the area you have the anterless seal for you can still tag a buck as that seal is good for a doe in the specific WMU or a buck anywhere in the province. If you apply for both draws (as I do) Ontario sends you the one game seal with the first draw (antlerless) and after that you only get the additional licence that allows you to use that seal during a controlled hunt if applicable.

Short answer is that you seem to be covered by what information you have provided. Go hunt and have fun and fill the freezer.

I tagged a nice big healthy meat doe late yesterday afternoon. Hoping to find a buck this morning and really get the freezer stocked for the coming year!

Great job!

Three days of rain and my back is playing up right now! Deer are smarter than us by bedding down!

Anyways, here we go....

Bravo! I type this from the stand for the controlled hunt in my area.
Nice work with the Swiss arms!

Thanks!

3 shots for 2 deer with Hornady 55gr GMX factory 5.56 loads, they did quite well. The spike was 1 shot from about a 60 deg angle, nicked the stomach/intestines but carried through and was a solid lung shot, he went about 80 yards from where I shot. The 7 point was shot about 3 minutes later, he snuck up on me while I was looking for the blood trail from the first. I managed to swing myself around and pumped 2 shots in to him quickly, the first went through his heart and flattened him momentarily, the second shot ended up being unnecessary as all it did was break his front leg. He went about 25 yards before falling dead.
