2018 Ontario deer

I dropped a nice 10 point opening day of muzzleloader season. 712am. Buck dressed 212lbs. Dragging him thru a partially flooded clover and alfalfa field just bout stroked me. Then had to get him into my truck. Damn 33s make the truck sit higher

Yesterday @ 7:00 am , I shot a 6 pt. buck with a Foster slug . Only 20 yds. from my blind . It went about 60 yds. & went down .
Rifle hunt on Manitoulin Island in 2 more weeks.

Very nice congrats.

What bullet / gr did you use and any pics on the damage on the meat / organs?

Again my buck walks past trail cam at 9pm, any tips to drag him in earlier? First year really trying to get one and any hepp would be appreciated

Locate the bedding area and the feeding area. Play the winds and get inbetween quietly and wait it out. The rut is coming so theyll likely be running scrap lines thru day light hours

It has been very quiet in wmu 65.

I feel that's the whole WMU this year. I'm in the southern part of 65 (SD&G counties area) and I've seen one doe and fawn out at the stand and nothing to write home about on the trail camera (namely those two plus another doe and a spike). Was talking to some MNR guys who were driving around dropping off CWD info/drop locations and they were saying that seems to be the trend in the WMU this season so far. Hopefully it'll turn around!

Congratulations to the successful hunters in both the Controlled and rifle deer hunts this week.
Some good pics too.

We managed to bag 5 pointer ( 6 with a broken tine) this past Tuesday evening hunting with my 15 year old son, his first year with his own gun and tag. (posting a pic is a pain)
Hunting the controlled hunt when the deer crossed the field to my left while in a tree stand. Got him to stop and punched a slug into him but still he ran off. Called my son over to track him after a bit. I followed both tracks and eventually blood while I told my son to watch ahead, although I felt the first shot would have been fatal. We came upon the buck and it tried to get up and my son tagged it again and turned the 5 pointer into a 0 pointer with a final head shot.
Well... at least there was no meat loss.
My son proved his worth when we dragged it out as I probably would had the big one if I was on my own.

Congratulations to the successful hunts!!!

Iv been hunting 5yrs now with no tags filled. I now live in WMU81 which has a very long bow season, and with no luck this past week in the controlled hunt, I'll give the bow season a try for the first time. I am hunting in a section of a 100ac lot that I'm 99% sure is a bedding area due to the sheer amount of droppings.

At this time are you guys calling or just waiting based on their known movement from trail cams?
If calling are you using bleats or grunts? At what point do you start rattling?

Worst deer hunt in 35 years for our gang of 6

Only ended up with two does. We usually only hunt bucks only til Wednesday, but we didn't see much so we dogged a bit and got them moving. Bucks still eluded us I only seen two young bucks and I hunted sun up to sun down 4 out of 5 days

I'm in the same area. South of Monkland. I went 3 days without hearing a single shot and there is no sign at all on the property I hunt. I have not seen one rub and very few scrapes. One guy in our group did shoot a fairly large buck but that's the only thing we've seen all week. I think the winter was rough and the drought didn't help at all.

I’m in 82B
I didn’t hear much shooting, maybe 5-6 shots each day.
We could have shot a bunch of does but typically we don’t unless we have to.

I saw a fawn Monday morning and shot my buck Monday night at 5:15pm
We didn’t get anything Tuesday
Got the other 4 bucks Wednesday, first time we got 4 in same day, so we decided not to shoot anything else unless it was a monster.

I had a doe & fawn 20 yards away for 10 minutes Thursday afternoon but no buck showed.

The biggest one we got was chasing a doe and had a big swelled neck, so I think the rut was just starting. None of the other bucks were swelled up yet.

Usually we just sit. No point pushing the deer onto the neighbours property.

My son and I hunt 80. Shot the only deer I saw all week.
Talking to other guys who haven't seen anything all week in the same area

My trail camera near one stand had 3 deer pics , doe and a fawn and I'm 99% sure the third deer was the buck that I shot.
Pretty quiet tonight too.

Still have my antlerless tag in my pocket. Hope to fill it or have my son fill his tomorrow. A prayer to the deer gods to be generous, blue skies and a memory waiting to happen.

We did quite well and filled 5 tags by Wednesday 4 bucks and a doe and the weather was brutal. Tuesday morning, first light, a six pointer showed at 4 yds, and was kind enough to look at the decoy I had placed on the other side of a creek. These big deer amaze me on the hit they can take from a 50 cal ML and still steam another 100 or so yds with their heart detached.
Enjoy and if he had brow tines he would be even scarier
