2018 Ontario deer

Looking for this little buck.... I have to wait for the controlled hunt in December.

Got this six point (no brow tines) at 4:25pm today with my 1974 vintage Marlin 336 in 35Rem. First pic is where he fell and I just laid my rifle on him for the pic. The deer was not moved until the tag was applied, and I was party hunting, so I had to wait for my friend to get down from his stand & walk over to me. The second pic is the buck tagged.

Jay I love that rifle. Niceto see it out doing what it’s meant to.

Thanks! Two years of looking for 'the one' & a fellow CGN'er made it happen! Very thankful to have it.

Well, I gutted my first deer Friday night! (Only had my licence two seasons now) Went out with a buddy, we both saw absolutely nothing all night......he hit a deer on the way home, not 2 km's down the road.

Oh dear, how much damage to the vehicle?

Cheers
Jay

Probably just under a couple grand. Dent in the bumper, crack in the grill, and a crack in the headlight. For the age of the truck I wouldn't even fix it. Deer hit the bumper flat. I think there was spine damage, I was surprised it didn't get up based on the lack on damage to the truck.

Nice!

I cant wait for the caterwauling next year when game animals are no longer required to be tagged. The discalimer you have to make to prevent it now detracts from the story, and for someone to accuse you is ridiculous and IMO insulting.

Anyways, poked that bees nest!

Anyways, we had a hard hunt in WMU49. Total #### weather for two weeks really limited deer movement. I did have the pleassure of sitting with our camps apprentice last night, we waited til dark in the ground blind, and as we unloaded the gun, encased it, and climbed out a doe came out and stood and looked at us at 40m. Doh!

He also called a buck in last week but had it hang up on him just in the tree line and couldnt get a clear shot. Hes a good kid and learned some good lessons this year. Wish he'd been able to take a deer.

We hunted the second week in WMU 56. It was a very strange year in that, even as we left on Sunday (18th.), the rut STILL hadn't started. Overall, the weather wasn't too bad though we lost a few days due to snowfall. There's only my buddy and I hunting and we both got buck tags. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but doe tags seemed pretty rare this year especially in our area. On the Thursday, my buddy broke a long drought and nailed a nice 5 pt. buck. I was chuffed since he hasn't nailed a deer since he was a teen (we're both in our 60's). My old carcass took a beating getting the thing out of the bush back to the house. We hung it for a few days and got it to the butcher on Sat. I still have an unfilled buck tag and my crossbow, but I've taken too much of a physical beating and there's too much snow down now. We'd need a snow machine to haul anything out of the bush, or some strong younger guys. Still, we have venison, and hunting with good company, good food, and comfortable digs always makes for a good time, deer or no deer.

My friend and I were also in wmu 56 for the second week. Didn’t see anything unfortunately, but had a great week hunting with a good friend. Then, on Friday afternoon, at sundown, I packed up my blind and chair, unloaded and socked my gun and started making my way back. As soon as I got to the road, I slipped on the ice and went down over my rifle stock, badly dislocating & braking my ankle in 3 places. Went to the Halliburton hospital and they set it and put a temp. cast on. I have an appt. with a surgeon today.

May not always get a deer, but we always have an adventure!
Be careful out there everyone.

Our camp hunted 56 the first week. Despite a nice `new to me`lever action (thanks again Lawrence), we didn`t see anything beyond a singe doe between rain showers. Back to southern Ontario, where my trail cams and time in the treestand is telling me that the deer are in full breeding lockdown the last few days, nothing moving except immature singles. This should end soon, and the bucks wil hopefully resume their searching...good luck to those still at it

Wk 1, 57 I got a 4 pt'r Tuesday after a rain delay. Dry spell until Saturday when a member of the gang took a doe. Does and fawns spotted almost every day.
Wk2, 56 my cousin took a doe the previous week and another cousin took a small buck Thursday. Not many deer spotted those 2 weeks by that camp. I just stay at my house for wk2 as I am only 12km from camp. Spun my truck out Tues morning and almost put it in both ditches but steered my way into control only to bury my truck in a beaver washout on the railbed 2 hours later. Stuck my nose out the door Friday morning to see about 6" of more grief and said no way, back into the fart sack.
A deer season to remember weather wise!

the daily double

No opportunities for almost two weeks. My trail cam showed a few bucks but they would only seem to venture out around 02:00-03:00. There were however some does who were recorded just before light or just after dark. So there was some hope. Saturday at 4:30 a doe came out at 50 yds and made the mistake of changing her direction and passing in front of my stand. She only went 20 yds and dropped in the snow. Since I didn't need to go looking for her, I decided to sit tight in case she had a friend. We were party hunting so there was still another doe tag available. That proved to be a good decision as another showed herself about 15 minutes later 100 yds out. I was able to make a good shot and she too went down within 20 yds. Nothing for two weeks and two in 15 minutes! Makes for a long evening of gutting, hauling and skinning. Butchering to follow.
