2018 Ontario deer

We ended up having a good week although it started out a little slow due to the weather. After Thursday morning stand we had 4 deer between 10 or 11 of us,
For thursday afternoons stand the wind was dead calm, and I heard more shots that afternoon than the 1st 3 days combined.
about 5 pm I had a buck come out into the standing bean field. Buddy of mine ranged from the stand I was in to the fence line on the far side of beans the week before, and it was 380 yds.
Where he came out he was about 40-50 yds my side of the fence,[so he was 330 yds give or take 10 yds or so] and of course he wasnt coming my way to give me a bit closer shot.
I got a good rest on railing, and put the crosshairs of my 30-06 on the top of his back and fired.
I flipped him over sideways, and could see all 4 legs standing straight up out of the beans. after a second he was back on his feet running. I took another shot at him, and he disappeared right away still in the beans.
After about 10 mins I walked over and he was down in the field. I didnt realize his size until I found him. he hasnt got huge rack, 7 pointer and tines are fairly short but rack is pretty wide.
he mustve been a scrapper, because when looking him over he had scars on his face and had a chunk about 3" long and 2" wide ripped out of bottom of his ear.
After getting him gutted and hauled up to shed, he was 182 lbs field dressed. He was the biggest deer and furthest away shot on a deer ive ever made, so I was more happy.
I tried for half hr or so to post picture of him, but cant get photobucket or anything to work,so unfortunatly I guess I cant put pic in, unless somebody here can help me out posting (Im a computer dumb dumb lol)
We ended up bringing in 5 deer on thursday so ended up with 9 deer in total. only 1 of them weighed in less than 100 lbs, so will end up with lots of venison this year

Try using Imgur. Seems easier than Photobucket and 10x less ads.

PS: sounds like a really decent deer, good job

Hopefully that link works. Like I said close to being computer illiterate. Buddy that I hunt with had trail cam up and Had picture of him couple weeks ago. Thought that turned out kinda cool. Before and after. you can see in both pics the big chunk out of his right ear as well

In 81A today and heard about 8 shots... But controlled hunt ended Friday, and is supposed to be bows only until Dec 2... :/

This week likely had the lowest number of hunters I have ever seen in a controlled hunt in WMU 90. I always hunt the December controlled hunt and prefer to bow hunt in the snow so the lack of deer shot in the first hunt is good for me.

Looks like far too many were scared away by the bad weather.

Last week was a rough hunt in 90B, we ended up with 5 though! A lot of troubles this year with trespassers and poachers around, seems to be a lot of #######s from Hamilton making there way out here!

My area the deer numbers are still high but with all the standing corn rotting in the fields it was a tougher hunt. The rut is just starting to rev up. If we get some sunny calm days the bucks should really get moving

How does the corn affect things?

Or make the corn your friend. The buck posted earlier was shot at the corner of 4 corn fields, and the entire concession was corn, in a stretch of bush about 80 yds wide and 200yds long, on a centre line fence, that funnels between two larger bushes. Connected by corn fields

Hunt the edges and inside corners as they will be cruising and chasing and the corn fields just act as more cover. A doe will often try and lose a buck in the corn when not interested.

Our group`s success has increased since we started hunting the corn instead of avoiding it. Shooting opportunities are often quick and an short range but it is not impossible.

Depends where you hunt, I have a bow tag and also a tag for the controlled hunt in our area. Lady behind the desk just warned me not to get the two mixed up. Controlled hunts are mostly either antlered or antlerless.

My first year applying for the controlled hunt so some of this was new to me... I also did not realize until recently looking at my tag again that my controlled validation tag is for a specific week. So, if I understand correctly, it wont be applicable for the other controlled hunt dates in that zone...

Yeah you're right, their good for either the November hunt or December hunt but not both.

15 does seen on the old family homestead in 59 last week. None shot due to no antlerless tags! The breakfast running gag quickly became 'How many does are we not going to shoot today?" We weren't disappointed!

Same here, saw lots of does and first year fawns, but no bucks.(area 59) I blame it on the wind lol Didn't get a northerly wind which is ideal for my stand.
Also saw a coyote run through rather quickly, must of scented me but didn't know where i was. also saw some sort of hawk, flying squirrel, heard a lynx or cougar across the lake, a pair of black and red squirrels and a one chipmunk. back at work yesterday and my stand has a good wind darn it.
