2020 Wild Turkey Season Thread

I’m going to try my luck with the instant pot for the legs and thighs, pulled hot turkey sandwich’s maybe on the menu (not tomorrow the missus made lasagna for tomorrow) .

My missus slow cooked the legs from last years birds. We don't have a slow cooker but she did it on the stove. They turned out pretty good but those birds were younger birds than this years. We’ll see how it goes. Im sure they will be good even if they are a little more tough

If you've got a slow cooker use that. Anything I've made in both is always better when properly slow cooked.

so due to Covid my blind an decoys are locked away and i cant get to them.

i have mediocre cammo, my gun and box call available.

What jerry rig set up can you guys suggest?

Scouting, calls and patience will get you farther than anything else.

so just to make a few black blobs. to look like hens?

anything for a fan or flash of red recommended

Just some blobs that move in the wind, you can paint the top of the stick red if you want. Obscure them a bit near some trees or sticks so they keep an eye on that instead of you. Set them up so you are between the turkeys and the decoys so you can get them even if they dont get close to the bags.

If you are in an open field, put them in the corner so the tree line can help muddle the lack of definition. You just want movement so they will come check it out.

If you are hunting in forest you probably dont even need a decoy as you will be getting them in with calling and they will be seeking instead of spotting them 200yrds away in a field.

Should have been an easy year for turkeys... so many birds... but I found new and creative ways to screw things up... including missing a GIANT gobbler at 35 yards with a 12 gauge (long story)... but even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile... finally connected on two. My turkey hunting instincts were firing on all cylinders, but my common sense was on vacation!

I have never seen so many huge gobblers, Including a band of 15, with no hens or jakes, I would have had that whole crew under 20 yards if they would have crossed a 2 foot ditch, but they turned and crossed at the culvert... lazy A-Holes!

Neither of my birds were huge, the one I missed, I believe to be the one I almost got last year, it was 400 yards from that spot... and this tom is HUGE! Maybe next year. Also, the pure white gobbler survived the winter, I saw him in the same field as last year and he is a nice big bird now.

Here is your ejection port shot, Alvaro.

Did the legs and thighs in the instant pot, 45 minutes fall off the bone. Made turkey stew with a biscuit top. Awesome. My 8 year old is going to eat the rest of the left over dark meat if I don’t hide it lol. I appreciate hunting more when the kids enjoy the spoils.DD0C9360-855C-4149-A670-D40FC93A0D47.jpg3040D973-6227-4D58-9095-D503152FF758.jpg
PS also makes a good breakfast lol

That bird is only 12 pounds... that is Adrian's twin brother, he is a leprechaun... you've seen the movie "Twins," with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito?

I went out opening day. Nada. Well not quite. I saw three birds in adjacent fields that didnt come anywhere near me. There was also a coyote that was around all day that must have been running them off. Maybe something about the 1000+ Canada guess that landed in the field next door...

Will be going out again soon, fingers crossed.
