2023 spring turkey

I look forward to turkey hunting the second it is over... I'm going to try and get a tom this year with a recurve bow... I recently got back into recurves after a 30 year hiatus. I have taken half a dozen or so with a compound, but this spring, I am going to do "bears & birds" with the recurve.

Best of luck buddy

Best of luck buddy

Based on my first couple of range sessions, I will need a lot of luck... and a LOT more practice before I release an arrow at a living critter... in the intervening 30 years my eyesight has deteriorated and I am finding it much more difficult to get on target.

Using a crossbow I've had great results shooting turkeys thru the wing joints if broadside and center chest shots face on and oddly enough when #### thru the back from behind the two I shot that way never kicked or flapped. Just straight dead. I used the same Broadhead I use for deer and I've only had 1 that managed to get about 15 yards of hopping. The only tom I shot while in full display I shot below the wing joint broadside. I have a shoulder injury so I can't pull and hold a compound of any weight at an angle close to horizontal so I have long given up my recurves and compounds. I still use a light draw 20lb compound for bow fishing but I only shoot fish within 5' of my legs while standing.
Bears love carp eggs

Years ago I had a bad shoulder injury as nasty as any. I spent almost two years on a waiting list to have corrective surgery. In the meantime, I was referred to an excellent chiropractor those practice is essentially with pro athletes. He told me about 70% of his practice was dealing with shoulder injuries and he told me he treats that with acupuncture. I laughed and almost walked out. His only response was, what do you have to lose. Well he was right. Treatments were like friggin magic. I went from not being able to move my arm in any direction for two years, to being about 80% in 3-4 months. It was honestly the best thing I ever did for myself. Never ended up having the surgery after all and my shoulder is as good as it gets. People I know that have had the surgery still have shoulder issues they have to deal with

I did the accupuncture. It was 1 of thee most lowest moments of my life. I walk in with my wife. Sit down meet the dr. The other person who works there not sure of the correct title comes in and hooks me up to an electric thing and says turn it up as needed then walked out. Me being me and not noticing any effect cranked the dial all the way up and involuntarily throw my body off the bed and onto the floor. My wife calls for supervision and the dr comes back taking us into a open recovery room and starts making me over as a porcupine. After my arm shoulder back and neck are quilled he walks away and my world view turns grey and narrow and I fall on my face right out of the chair. My wife runs to get the dr and he pulls a few quills out of my neck and I'm back. He says well congrats you respond very well to acupuncture. They help me into a chair and this lil old lady had to be like 80 looking like the hell riser looks at me and says "phucking first timers". I was moved to a bed and had to put my feet up on a stool while laying on my back after that. My wife still laughs about

Dr Turnbull and his side kick kukody or however it's spelt kept saying I was to young for surgery and just kept giving me injections that didn't work. A great local chiropractor has really helped over the years. I was a skeptic I admit until I shot with a chiropractor on the skeet field. He gave me an adjustment on station 8 and then got some tape after and it helped. He's since passed on but the local guy has fixed me up more times than I care to admit

Fortunately I respond very well to acupuncture with electrical stimulation. I’ve been successfully treated in this manner for numerous different injuries. The only time I felt discomfort, albeit very tolerable, is when acupuncture needles were stuck deep under the front of my knee cap. All of these acupuncture treatments were nothing short of miraculous for me

Anyhow…..sorry to derail the thread

I plan to try it out this year for the first time. I don't get one thing though, when you use a call and you get a gobbler clucking back at you are they supposed to come to you or are you supposed to track it down? I looked on youtube and learned many things I didn't know but nothing about this specifically. Also what WMU's have you NUTZ had success in?

I hunt in the 90s. The south west tip of Ontario.
To answer your question it depends. If on land that only I have permission to hunt on and if the land allows I will close the distance to the tom and try to set up watching a trail he's likely to come down. Other areas where there may or may not be other hunters I generally stay put while calling. Ive shot many by calling to them just at legal light to see where they're roosted. After fly down if they didn't come my way I'll start to stalk thru the timber and look for them around 9 or 10am. Once located the terrain dictates how to proceed from there

If the wmu has a season for wild turkey, you can bet hunters have had success there. It used to be you had to take a course in order to hunt wild turkeys in Ontario and while the course wasn't exactly riveting, it might answer some of your questions. Here is a link to the course video https://youtu.be/2mUWMTaimmI
And if you get a gobbler clucking back at you, I'd sit tight because it probably ain't a gobbler. :)

Sit and wait they have super good eye sight and there could be another one closer by that's not gobbling! He might be with a hen but will leave them after a few hours or less normally and come check you out.

Had some decent action on cameras the last 2 weeks but has dried up the last couple days. I will be taking my new to me sulun ss211 out. Patterns good up to 25yrds with a pair of tightwad chokes. And if they get in close enough i can melt whats left of him with the fireball.

Had 3 jakes come in to my decoys. I let them fight my jake decoy and breed my laydown hen decoy for 7-8 minutes waiting for a Tom. Finally I decided that I took a vacation day, drove too far and slept in my car so I wasn't going home without meat. Spur nubs are no bigger than my nipples Laugh2
