2025 Waterfowl Season

The Snows have started arriving in numbers since yesterday along with Sandhill Cranes, Canada's, Specks and ducks, especially Pintails.
Got out for a solo hunt this morning and from 1/2 hour before legal until I left the field shortly after 11am there was never 5 seconds without the sounds of geese or birds in flight. It was in a word, AWESOME.
I managed 6 dark geese, 5 Specks, a pair of which that came in together are probably the most mature Specks I've taken and one lone suicidal Canada plus 3 Snows.
What a great day to be out there taking it all in.

Good job on the birds! SW Ontario can be a great spot for waterfowl. Can't wait for the regular season, cooler weather always makes for better hunting.

First shoot of the season. Grandson's worked the calls quite well, plus they make great retreivers; especially since I have a sprained ankle and broken rib. Had our limit within one hour. A couple of Italian shotguns got the job done. Some really big honkers in this brace......................more adventures to enjoy in the coming months!

What is the sxs in the pic? Looks like it has some nice furniture on it!

My wife kicked off her 2025 season late due to work but she definitely started it off strong once she was finally able to get out. She harvested her first banded bird today and a beautiful mature Snow Goose no less.
We ended her first hunt of the season with a limit of Lesser Canadas and a bonus of 3 Lesser Snow Geese. Quite a stellar morning!

I thought that you didn't hunt over water? :D
Ha! I hadn't in years but I was approached by a local rancher who has a man made dugout as a backup water supply for his feed lot wanting me to get the geese off the dugout as they leave such a mess behind he has concerns about water quality for his cattle. The dugout is 1800 feet long, 120 feet wide and 14 feet deep. It's easy hunting. I don't need waders though I did put a 12' jon boat there just in case I need it but to date I've needed it once to pick up a downed goose.
I've left 6 Dakota honker floaters out for the season and hunt it once a week letting the birds build between hunts. I retrieve the birds and the decoys if I decide to move them based on the wind direction with a 7' fishing rod loaded with 30# braid and 5 of Diamonds lure...not exactly "hard core" water hunting! 😬IMG_8646.jpegResized_20250922_102631.jpegResized_20250922_102626.jpegResized_20250922_102637.jpegIMG_8974.pngIMG_8975.pngIMG_8976.png

Ha ha Ha that sure seems counter productive to the ranchers needs...we'll fill that ol' dugout with a couple thousand geese for a week and chase them off for a day...I do know of a group of local hunters that were pinched 30 yrs ago for using decoys while using a damage control hunting permit before regular season.

He's quite happy, he loves getting goose jerky.
