.22 ammo shortage and buying a new .22?

I'm newly returned to shooting after many years and among my first planned purchases are a couple of .22's (one handgun and a rifle). Here's my question....Given the recent shortage of .22 ammo (I have not seen any in either of our 2 CT's, Walmart or local gun store any of the times I've been in in the past 6 weeks) should I be hesitant to buy guns I may end up constantly having trouble finding ammo for?

Does the current shortage make you less likely to buy a new .22?

My current shortage of money makes me less likely to buy a new .22, but otherwise I would always be happy to acquire a new toy in .22. I haven't been able to buy (cheap) ammo for 2 or 3 months, right now just chipping away at what I purchased earlier. If you find a deal on a gun, might as well go for it and hope you can find ammo later. Having a gun and no ammo is still better than nothing at all and I think it would be worse to regret missing a deal on a gun that might never come back.

There seems to be more .22 ammo coming into the country. I still have at least 7500 rounds in my ammo pile. So I wont be buying for a few months. But I just picked up a new Alfa Proj .22lr and a bucket o bullets the other day. Both were on sale. Nothing beats a couple of .22's and a brick or 2 ,for good times.

Buy 'em.
.22 may be scarce-ish, but you're bound to find a couple boxes here & there.
You want scarce, look for 8mm Mauser, 8x56R, or for that matter, .577 Snider ammo.

I have a lot of 22lr rifles already but if something I want comes up I would get it. There is ammo around just have to wait and keep looking for it. I have enough for a while as it sits.

I just bought a new .22 yesterday. Cabela's here in Winnipeg had a decent supply of .22 lr, of various brands. It can be had, and as Green Skull mentioned, supply seems to be picking up a bit. If the gun you want is available, grab it. I'd be more concerned about missing out on that opportunity than on ammo.

if you don't mind shipping, some of the sponsors have it in; buy more than a box and the shipping doesn't hurt as much.

Play with whatever cheap ammo you can find now (it's available, might have to order it), then start stockpiling in midsummer when inventories start catching up again.

Every year, the same thing. Just before spring, supply starts to dry up as people panic buy for target/gopher season. Mid to late summer, the stores start getting their backorders just as demand is starting to taper off. Stockpile what you'll need for the next year in the fall (it really isn't much of a financial commitment to set aside 4-5K rounds). It just requires something 99% of people are incapable of - thinking ahead. Then you can ignore the ".22 ammo shortage! Sky is falling!" panic that happens same time every year, and just top up whenever you spot your favourite brands in the stores.

Oh, and set aside whatever crap ammo you pick up to hand to the mooches who never buy their own when you're out varminting. Super-X and Thunderbolt are great for that exact purpose, and not much else.

There is no shortage of .22 ammo, just a shortage of good deal for buying bulk. I've been closely watching for case lot sales and there has been next to none, but every store has .22 ammo by the box.

If a 22 cal. interests you , you might as well buy it , as it is one of the most common cals. out there , and there will always be ammo for it somewhere . There has been a little panic buying and hoarding as of late , but it will all settle down soon . Here on the East Coast , there is lots of 22 ammo in most stores , no shortage here....buy the 22 , stockpile a little ammo when you see it , and ENJOY !

I wouldn't worry about a 22 shortage in the long run, it will be around, just perhaps a little more costly than it has been.

There is bulk ammo available at $30-35 for 500+, and bricks for $35-40.

Center fire pistol ammo is $20 - 40 for 50 rounds and users blast it away like there is no tomorrow.

Yet when I tell them 22 Match ammo is work $10-20 a box they look at me like my next stop is as a self admitted candidate for the psych ward.

These five groups are worth about $20 yet 50 rounds of pistol ammo with a greater semblance of a shotgun pattern board is viewed by some as a greater accomplishment.

Different strokes for different folks!

Ive seen guys go though over $100 in 45acp in under 30 mins.
My friend and I did some quick math. I bought 5000 rounds of AE 22 for just under $200.
So 2500 rounds in 30 mins. Even with my AM180 drum that takes 275 rounds. I dont think I could shoot that much in that time period.
Like you said, to each his own.
However 200 rounds vs 2500 rounds. Its alot more trigger time for $100.

Amen brother! I've only got back into shooting in the past two years and I too have figured out that pattern. I don't plan on buying much ammo until fall.

It really seems this year is different though..
