.22 CB vs raccoon?

...I would recommend against using them. I hunted grouse this year while deer hunting for the first time. I carried my deer rifle in my hands and my Cooey Model 60 in my Eberlestock pack loaded with CB longs. I practiced before the season and was able to hit a toonie at 15 yards consistently.
When it came time to shoot a couple grouse I killed one instantly with a headshot...but on examination found the bullet had NOT penetrated the skull at all. I had an oppurtunity to shoot another treed grouse and misjudged the angle and hit the grouse in the wing [covet]. It dropped from the tree wounded and stunned and I had to finish it off with a head stomp...it was very much alive!

Upon examination of the bird I found the wing covet had not even been penetrated at 12-15 yards by the projectile. Now I have seen the same links as everyone else saying how effective CB's are at dispatching game and I was hopeful. However after seeing firsthand the lack of penetration by this round I will not use it on game again and would have to advise someone not to if they asked me.

Mad Mikey :)

Dad live in Montreal too? If you start shooting any firearm, in town, you'll be arrested, lose your PAL and all your firearms. Dad needs to call the pest control people again and seal up his house.

Dad does not live in Montreal, Dad lives in an area where the discharge of a firearm on private property is legal if the projectile does not leave the limits of the property. Thank you....

I need your help guys,
I am looking for a quiet pest control round for raccoons, is .22CB by CCI legal in canada? Where can i find some if it is? Also, is it powerful enough for this purpose?
Thanks in advance!

22 CB's on a raccon are only good at very close range of 7 yards or under, and head shots only(back of head, side of head in the ear, but not the front).

A pest control guy should be able to set a live trap in the atack and catch them in one night.

they work-but you've got to hit them right between the eyes-I've rolled lots of them out of the cedar trees at night when they've been at my chickens-shine their eyes and aim right between them. One of those box live traps work well too, bait it with some cat food or a piece of chicken. These things are a problem because you've got the problem but generally can't get official permission to deal with it

I have the same problem with coons in my attic, I throw a string of firecrackers out in the middle of the road as a distraction then hit them centre of chest with my 458 loaded with a 350 grain Hornady going about 2500 fps, coon is now dead, but my roof leaks.

Why don't you just put some good old car antifreeze in some pie plates up in the attic. Rocky will lap it up with all his friends. Just make sure not forget to go up and dispose of the bodies, they'll get pretty ripe after a while. Be careful all the cats and dogs in the area don't do the same. Oh ya this is not really legal to do, so don't tell too many people about it.

Why use a CB if you don't have to?
Are the racoons living in the attic right now?
If they are not in the attic have you blocked the holes?

S'ok!

To purchase/own, yes. To shoot, yes. To hunt with, I wasn't aware we had min calibre's for pest-control :).

Where can i find some if it is?

Most big-box places. Le Baron's actually has the Rem Cee Bee's in stock, last time I checked.

Also, is it powerful enough for this purpose?

Have I got a link for you! :D

Thanks in advance!

Word to the wise...for anything not a head-shot and over 10 yards, even .22 LR's can be suspect on a raccoon...:(

are you twisted little twits serious? antifreeze, car exhaust? put the animal down in a humane manner:rolleyes:

why use such a low powered round? you are likely breaking laws by shooting too close to other dwellings (hence the need for a quiet round) so you might as well go all the way and use a long or long rifle with homebrew quiet down mechanism.

have a bow? would be a much better option for getting rid of the coon problem. very quiet and you dont have to hit such a small target (back or sides of head) for a kill shot.

First, IMHO (and per above), I think he said:

Next, bows are a tad more exotic to a rimfire-shooter than are CB's...:)

I think it's a little crazy to be recommending someone make a Homemade and highly illegal silencer.

As for CB's I have fired them all kinds of places where I was either supposed to or not and as long as the barrel is longer than 16" they are quite quiet. In my revolver they are really loud though, probably as loud as a Rifle with LR ammo. I've killed lot's of Prairie Chickens and Squirrels with them, and I think that If you put the bullet in the right place it will kill a Raccoon, Although it doesn't really have the Stopping power of a full powered .22 or even a Subsonic like the CCI that opens up hard.

I Cannot condone the creation of illicit Suppressors. A felony in pretty much every country that has a licensing program for them.
However the brightside for you is that if you make them correctly and dispose of them as such, I guess that you cannot get caught.

Stick with Subsonics, at least thats what I normally use. Also Aim for the eyes, or back of the skull. Other places that I have shot them just lets them run loose bleeding everywhere.

he says he is on private property and its ok to discharge firearms as long as the projectile does not leave the property. wait for a shot where the coon is climbing up the side of the tree. any pass through will be stopped by the tree. why even bother with something so small if you dont have to. this doesnt really make sense unless you gotta keep it quiet for a reason...

in a petersens hunting magazine article the author made an extension for his 12 gauge barrel that was ported in a specific pattern to reduce noise. he used low velocity shells and reported being able to hear the pellets hitting crows. this was 100% legal as the US government (forget the name he used for the gun specific division) did not deem it a suppressor, but a barrel extension. in order to be classified as a silencer/suppressor, there must be a chamber. this was just an aluminum pipe with holes in it.

gonna go post in general to see what people say. ;)

If there is no restriction ( in the country) get a bigger round . Not that I'm a "bigger is better" kind of guy but I've shot 'coons before .......

with in 20yds they should do the job

check your regs you might need a licenced dog to hunt raccoon I know you do in Ontario but we need licences to do everything so who know's.

if you plan to hunt racoons at Night, then you need a licenced dog
and permit to hunt them at night.
during day, small game licence only.
(in Ont anyway)
