.22 CB vs raccoon?

I would try CB's. I had the same question so i brewed up a nice batch of Ballistics gelatin. The first 5 shots were CCI cb shorts. They penetrated about 7-8 inches. Barrel was 22" action was bolt.

#8 shot went 3 inches, .308 JHP blew it apart.

Be careful ;) :

My suggestion:

Scrounge about for a 3' length of 18" PVC pipe (you might have some leftovers from your If-####-Happens gun storage project).

Bury it in the ground on a slight slope...maybe 10-15 degrees from vertical.

Dump a can of tunafish in the bottom.

Curious coon checks in, does not check out. One 7.62X39 (or maybe five .22lr) at the hind end from 2' away is quite effective.

Has anyone ever toyed with making subsonic center fire ammo for pest control, like a subsonic .308 Winchester or even a subsonic .223?

I load the 7.62x54 with a light charge of fast burning reddot behind a cast bullet and it is pretty quiet especially in a full length Mosin Nagant with a 29" barrel. You have to experiment with the right load for whatever case your working with. Stick with lead as If you get a stuck bullet you do not want to be trying to get out a jacketed bullet.
I used mine to dispatch pigs in a sensitive area. It blew their brains out quite well. After having some failures with .22 shells I switched to these.

"...if the projectile does not leave the limits of the property..." That could be an issue. A Remington .22 CB Short or Long has 640fps left at 50 yards. A thick bush will likely stop it though.

CB's out of a 28" BSA Martini are really quiet.

I had forgotten all about slingshots. Used to be really good with them. Hmmmm, need to cast some 32 cal lead balls.......

Hodgsons lists a 55gr .223 load with Titegroup if you can believe it: 3.1gr = 1064fps @ 4,000 cup. That gets you in the ballpark for sure...

CCI CB longs suck for Racoon defence. I shot one behind the shoulder, 20yrd, and the little bastard tore ass down the hill and vanished.

there goes my new hat :(

BOOM HEADSHOT

I have found the CB's to work well on crows out to 35 yards. Nice and quiet. I will be trying the Remington CBee's when I get my hands on some.....:)

Get my CII CB's from Canadian Tire. Bit less than 10 bucks/100 is a bit pricey but the things are dead quiet out of a long barreled 22. Not too accurate past 20 yards I found. Shot many a crow around my place with them, likely kill a coon with a head shot but you don't want one running through the neighborhood wounded!
