222 rem carry around rifle

A lot of us here grew up with particular chamberings that have been supplanted in modern usage by others that are more widely available today, or a slightly different shape of brass tube holding the same powder. A lot of hunting and shooting for me is a connection to my youth and the past, simpler times, nothing silly about a .222 making you smile when walking into a frosty morning. I can appreciate a modern gun and cartridge for what it is, but will always have a soft spot of those I knew as a boy. My “.222” is the .218 Bee but it’s the same thoughts and attachment.

My thoughts exactly . I have a few triple deuces the two that I use most often on the farm are two 700 BDL's sporter barrels with 3x9 Leupolds and steel mounts they weigh in at 8 pounds even. I have owned Rem 600 and 660 triple two's but the weight difference was not all that much . A short cut off 20' 700 would be handy not a big fan of the model 7 pencil barrel but I like the super short action

222 Rifles

Pretty much a used market, not many new rifles in 222.

Tikka T3X though finding one in stock could be tough, check with Clay at Prophet River.

Used
Sako AI
Remington 600
Savage 340
Remington 788

Budget?

Cabelas currently has Rem 783 in 223 on sale for $399.00

I'm a big 222 fan down to only 3 currently

Sako AI custom
Ruger 1A
Remington 600

Also own

Cooper 223AI
Remington 783 HB 223

Good luck in your search

I'd love to have an old school M700 Varmint with walnut stock in 222. I'd top it with an old Weaver steel scope in Weaver mounts.

Personally, I love the .222 and the .22 Hornet for that matter... sure I can download a .223 to both of those levels, but those graceful cases have an elegance that the .223 et al have not managed to capture. Stick with the .222... it is a great choice.

My wife's Sako L46-222 that she lets me use sometimes. Great rifle very accurate. Bottom rifle

I have one with a 4x12 Leupold one good woodchuck combo . The triple two is much ignored now days to bad it deserves better.

The varmint bdl 700’s are one of the most accurate factory rifles I have shot. I have a couple in 223 Rem, and in 308 Win. Beautiful pieces

Tikka T3x Compact in 223. Forget the 222, it's not the 1950's anymore

Unfortunately... it's 2020, the year of the Turd where guns, white heterosexual men, masculinity, real women and femininity... pretty much anything good is slandered and called evil.

OP- I have a 1960s vintage m700adl in 222 (~20-22" barrel..) that is light and has went on many woods/field trips with me: it has been used to take all sorts of vermin. As has been suggested, the small Sako AI action, Pre Tikka T3 short action, Krico, Remington m7...

Epps has some combinations with rifle barrel in 222.
I think Gobles has an Anschutz 1530 in 222 for sale right now.
They aren't pretty, but the very affordable Savage 340 isn't a bad rifle: I had one in 222 when I couldn't afford much but I still enjoyed and slew lots of vermin with it.

Keep looking... regular sales of them pop up on the EE regularly and there are probably lots of naysayers naying for the newest fad and senselessly unloading their (no less effective) classics.

EDIT: Post number 31 - ignorance is killing off the 222...

My .222 is a Rem M722, barrel shortened to 20". My son shot a .189 3-shot group at 100yd with it. Rem M600 also a good choice, very accurate out of the box and they can be found for $500-$600 in good condition.

Remington model Seven in .223 is a carry friendly rifle. No one killed the .222 it’s just the development of the AR15/M16 slightly modified the .222 to get the job done and be safer then the .222 that needed a different projectile with higher pressures to be successful then military popularity took over and the rest is history. —-Dieseldog!

I have noticed that there is lots of 222's showing up at estate and retirement auctions these days. I guess the old guys or their estates are selling. I picked up BSA 222 a year ago for very reasonable, and the load data for the rifle as well that worked marvellously.
