.223 or .308?

Meph your right the 6.5 is a great bullet, but what I have seen 6.5/284 barrels gone as low as 850 rounds to 1200 max, 6.5by 47 Lapua just not enough speed at 1000, to run against the big 7mms, I like the 260Rem it will push them down the track nicely.

Shoot with fellow named John with 6.5/06 fine shooting gun, and he can steer it but one you use a large case with small cal= short throat life.

Of course the bigger cases will be harder on barrels with a 6.5, but with the 308 case, ackley improved, you can get a decent horsepower without burning things up, I hear. Mystic should know how long the barrels last, I think. It's a very attractive round.

6.5-08 and it's Improved version can push a 140/142grn bullet at 6.5x284 velocities with good barrel life.

I am currently pushing 142grn Sierra's at 2920fps and it shoots well out to 900m/1000yds. If someone was looking to get into F-Class with this cartridge then they are shooting in the open class against all the other Open cart's.

Sounds fantastic... I'm impressed.

Meph, but that is not what the OP wanted to know about.

Easy enough for you to start another thread for the 6.5's. Although that has been debated at length before. Always fun.

I too believe the 6.5 as a great all around and all the recoil I want in an F class rifle. Accuracy and ballistics have been every thing I hoped for. Barrel life is also a very nice compromise.

If your goal is to build off a Savage, I would recommend you use the 260 improved reamer that Shilen has. I am using it and it works great. The case volume is every so slightly smaller then the Mystic and not enough to matter. The throating for the 140's will have to be done in a second step but the orig throat is perfect for the 120 to 130gr VLD's

the 260Rem reamer is also very nice but for a single shot, I would go with the extra case prep of the improved case. Very easy to get speed and case life is awesome.

Unless you are competing, the lighter bullets will do all you want WAY out there. Essentially you have a short 270 so all the same hunting possibilities are there.

6.5 Mystic and 260improved should get you 1500 to 1800rds of F class accurate fire.

Out to 2000ish rds, you will have excellent min of dinner accuracy.

I have received feedback from shooters who bought my 'old' barrels cut and set them back (remove 4" off the chamber side) and they are shooting really really well.

Indeed, sorry. Just wanted to throw the third option out there :p it's that I was reading your article on 6mmBR where you have an impressive group with your unconventional rifle.

So finally, unless OP wants to hit things that are bigger than targets, than coyotes or gophers, he should stick to .223 with a fast twist.

I think 308 would be worth it for the actual oomph it has, but if OP wants to hit nothing but paper, .223 sounds like a clear winner.

Thanks, that's good barrel life for that kind of gun. heavy/hot .223 has more barrel life right? I heard from the AR15 shooters that they can keep a good Noveske barrel accurate at like 20 000 rounds, but that's probably a different kind of accurate (minute of steel plate in a three gun competition, I guess)

I would expect a 223 F TR barrel to get at least 3000rds of competitive accuracy.

Might even get to 5000rds?????? No idea as I have not kept my barrels that long :)

AR barrel life is completely different. Most factory AR's with the 556 Chamber would be considered burnt out when brand new by F class standards.

Chromed plated barrels should retain their rifling for a whole lot of shooting and hit min of large target not far from the muzzle. That is about as accurate as users are expecting.

I chuckled at the "considered burnt out when brand new" as it's probably true. I was imagining around 4000 rounds, yeah. That's a good caliber then, I'll really think hard on a .223.
