22LR shortage - what's going on?

So...after 14 pages of discussions on this subject, is it fair to say that there is no shortage of .22 ammo? Maybe some temporary local drought here and there, but no shortage in general.

The bigger question (in my mind at least) is why this thread keeps popping up every year? I have counted 5 of them so far?

This should clear it up as to why.

short·age
ˈSHôrtij/
noun
noun: shortage; plural noun: shortages
1.
a state or situation in which something needed cannot be obtained in sufficient amounts.
"a shortage of hard cash"

Silver; the other day I went to my local Bay store to buy a pair of straight cut levi's jeans, like I have done for the past 30 years. They were out of that particular style in my size. Although they had different cuts of Levi's and other brands in my size. On the way home, I stopped by a Wal-Mart. Same. Using your definition of "shortage", I am entitled to believe that there is a shortage of jean pants in Canada, right? Lol

You've been buying that style and size for 30 years, now you can't get them. Yeah, I'd say that's a shortage. Sure, you can get another style, but that's not what you wanted, is it? Exactly analogous to the .22 ammo situation. Last year I walked over to my local CT during my lunch hour to buy CCI SV's whenever I needed some, and still had time to eat lunch. Since about last September, no go, none there. Now I have to drive to Hamilton. That's an hour each way of my time and roughly 15 bucks in gas that I didn't have to spend last year. Sure, I can walk over to my local CT during my lunch hour and buy a box of Thunderbolts and still have time to eat lunch. But I don't want Thunderbolts, so who cares.

Generally speaking there is less 22lr available. Less variety available. Less bulk packs available. It definitely is NOT the way it used to be like last year.
At ALL local stores I see less. At ALL CGN vendors I see less.
I would say there is a shortage.

It it appears that the biggest problem is that retailers do not seem to know when they are going to be re-supplied from the distributors , so it has become hit or miss....no one seems to know the real story.....one day , there is 22 ammo everywhere.....two weeks later , nothing can be found.....then the cycle repeats itself.....

i wonder if peoples buying habits would change if the retailers told people who asked there will be a large shipment in next month.

I think there is a lot of hoarding going on.

One vendor said that people who used to buy one or two thousand primers now buy 5 thousand.

The stuff is out there but gets bought up almost as fast as the shelves get stocked

YUP.. You got , Not mine BTW :)

I can get lots of .22, so no shortage, price is a wee bit higher but ok, what you can't get is the ammo most folks are looking for, as silver fox said. Try finding cci standard velocity round nose! By the way if you do find it ,,please pm me!! ;0) Winchester and blazer etc can be found with a little footwork, but in my firearms, they are not anywhere near as accurate as cci!
So the search continues!

Was in Cabelas in Edmonton yesterday - Not a single round of .22LR to be seen. Probably just gopher season ramp-up, or I've gone blind.

However, when the rest of y'all were talking about .22 shortages, Cabelas had it by the pallet.

Edit to add - Cabelas.ca is backordered or out of stock on almost every single type of .22lr

As long as we're reporting inventory :) I was in Al Simmons in Hamilton yesterday and they had lots of Mini-Mags (the real ones not the Zombie Bulk Ones), Stingers, Blazer 500 pak bricks and Federal Gold Champion, and an assortment of 50 pack boxes of various flavours.

Well I have been checking around for $23.00 boxes of Winchester white 555 or even the $15.00 boxes of 333 for the last 2 months and they are not in stock at all ever. An when I say check I mean 3 to 4 Walmarts and Canadian tires a week. Wholesale sports does have a ton of Ammo at $39.99 for 500, Winchester silver. I'm gonna say shortage on the cheaper stuff for sure. The higher priced stuff like CCI is always in stock. I'm even considering backordering the Federal 2200 from Cabelas. The Sponsors which I have checked are all $29.99 for for 50 That I could see.
