243 win 105 berger vld, dead elk 688 yards

Breathe!!!!!

Smoke a J and have a beer. ;)

yeah... you are right... we should all just blast the first eligible thing at 700 yards like the video..... geeze.. and to think I have been tracking, patterning and monitoring trophy animals for the last 20 years of hunting... wow... what a waste of time.... I should get a low caliber centerfire and just start shooting from wherever I want... who cares if they get wounded.. I can post my one success story on youtube and be a cgn hero.... whatever....

No Brad see, the difference between me, you, everyone in this thread, and John Barnes...

Is John Barnes knows what the **** he's talking about, spends time doing instead of talking, and kills **** dead.

No... the difference between you and me is this... John Barnes himself said the shot was outside his comfort zone... yet he had the girl try it anyways.. but your hard on for him has the blood diverted from your brain and unable to make a logical decision.... maybe having a sense of remorse for your game and realizing the potential consequences of a bad shot would do you some good.... that wasn't a pop can she shot at ... that was a living creature and as such deserves respect.......

The four things that bug me about the elk vid is
1: the small caliber/cartridge used
2: the match bullet
3: the person shooting didnt seem to be very experienced
4. from my armchair position it did seem like they could've stalked closer, but they didn't want to so they could have a better promo video for selling their gear.

Yes, it worked. But it does seem more like a marketing stunt than good hunting skill.
Their trying to sell their fancy long range rigs, and that's why everything in that video is as you see it. It's a commercial, plain and simple.

The cartridge is on the lower end of his comfort zone, not out of it. He also said he's documented the .243/105 VLD combo down over a dozen Elk. How much more evidence do you need? The guys a believer in "too much gun is a bad thing" for a person. Slapping a 7RM/168 VLD in front of the girl is gonna do what for her hunt? Punch her in the eye and turn her off of shooting for a long while...

No hard on for none of the Grey Bull guys here Brad, frankly I find their taste in guns repulsive. I just have repsect for what the whole GB crew does, and they do it well.

It is pretty funny though, watching guys like you get their panties bunched up on the topic of LRH ethics. Best head back to your deer blind, wait over you pile of apples and corn set out at 70 yards...wait its archery season now...15 yards.

You just don't get it.. I don't care about LRH... if that is your skill then fill your boots... but FFS pick something better than a .243 for the task.... anyone educated can list at least 20 better choices....

I still don't consider it hunting... but if the animal has a good chance of getting put down cleanly I am all aboard.....

........ from my armchair position it did seem like they could've stalked closer, but they didn't want to so they could have a better promo video for selling their gear.

That right there is the sole reason for taking that shot. Complete BS on the "we couldn't get closer......they were spooked.......there's no cover.....".
Now the Kassandra's of the hunting fraternity can plead to their husbands to buy them a Greybull rifle so they can snipe elk at half a mile, preferably firing Bergers which have a unique "bunker buster" ability

After all, if it just shoots like a regular rebarreled/modified/customized Rem 700, why would you spend $6000?

So the GB guys are over 12 for 12 on .243/105 VLD Elk kills...but thats not enough for you? I get exactly what you're trying to say, first you slammed LRH, then when proven wrong you slammed the girl shooting, then when you were proven wrong you attacked the cartridge/bullet combo.

I dont like match bullets on game either, I use bonded cores or TTSX's, but I don't go saying that people who have shot enough animals to fill my 150 acre hunting property with gut piles that they're wrong. 'Cuz that they ain't.

LOL... nobody has proven ANYTHING wrong... would love to see your precious GB guys' record other than what is posted on youtube.... man... get real... spend some time in the forest... learn to tell deciduos from coniforous at least....lol....

I was in the CDN forces... fully sniper trained (look it up and realize what that course entails).... pay me big money and make it my career to go around road hunting big game and believe me, I will make some incredible shots... and yeah.... I will miss a few... but the ones I miss... I won't post on youtube... (those animals go through agony.. wouldn't want to offend potential customers)....you want to drink these guys' koolaid have at 'er.... but to think that this young woman under coaching was taking a high percentage shot with that .243 is naive at best....

It's time for you to get some meds, just because you think it's not hunting doesn't mean **** to other people.

It means plenty to others in this thread who don't think it is hunting... and if you take the time to read there are plenty....

and the most important point.... whateher "hunting" or not... some of us are concerned with the humane dispatching of game... because we have spiritual and fundemental rspect for our quarry...

I am wondering why everybody is so wound up on this thread?

It is getting to be like an episode of the View on here.

What is done is done, carry on, go hunting, enjoy your day the way you feel best.

So, there have never been gun shot animals that got away from Holy Grail hunters like you at 50-100 yards? ya right

Still don't get where you got the idea I caught ghey and took an affliction to the GB crew. As said before I just have respect for John, and many other long range hunters and shooters (Ian McMurchy comes to mind) who've dedicated large portions of their lives to something like this, and it tee's me off that nit wit's like you come out, knowing nothing of their work, gawking about how its all a commercial. You think these guys got a business degree, picked up a gun and started hitting stuff way out there? They spent years of their lives, unsponsored, shooting and learning.

yes... there have been... absolutely....

Look... I am no holy grail hunter..... as you say... but I do my best to put my quarry down cleanly and with respect....

Putting them down feeds my family (and believe me, in this economy we can use it)..... It truly bothers me that someone can be irresponsible enough to showcase a "sport" where long range success is the trophy when the consequences of failure to them is a spent sponsors bullet while the consequences to the animal in question is an agonizing death.... anyone who believes these guys at 6-700 yards are 12/12 is naiive... but those failure vids dont make youtube and that is my point....

It's nothing more than shameless advertising and these guys could care less about hunting and sporting and firearms law.... all they want to do is make a buck...

Archie,
I take offense to you calling me a nit wit. Take a look in the mirror. You've taken a big drink of koolaide, and your hero Johnny is making a commercial. He's selling a product, and that video was set up to glorify that product. Open your eyes.

Yes you're right, I better cancel all my GB orders, and all my VLD's I ordered.

Many hunters take "unethical" offhand shots at under 200 yds, because at that range they are beyond their skill level. Does everyone shout at a moose that doesn't see them 50 yds away so the hunt can be "fair chase"? There sure are a lot over CGN members that are way more righteous than I am. Maybe I should stop having my "own" opinions.
