243 win 105 berger vld, dead elk 688 yards

Bearkllr, and Huntin' Gun fire up the oven and throw a crow pie in there for me.

Waiting on Johns response to my question. But I may have just lost a lot of respect for a damn fine shooter.

Don't sweat it. It was a fun discussion that gave me something to do on an otherwise dull evening.

Now, if we can just get you to change your mind on the M700...
[*add sound of can of worms opening]

First deer I killed was with a longbow. No mentor. Taught myself to use a bow and wandered through the forest. I was 14 years old.

Just saw the little buck and shot at 30 yards.

I wonder if the elk in the video or the deer I shot at 30 yards with a longbow was in the most danger of being wounded and lost. Hmmm

My guess is that you actually used that bow a lot and shot a lot of targets before you hunted with it...The girl in the video, not so much.

John says she owns a .300wsm, yet he chooses to give her a .243 for this shot...

This is clearly stunt shooting on live animals to push his rifles and berger bullets. I've never had much respect for him or his gear, even before these vids were made. I've asked him recently and in the past for pics of the dead animals, and have yet to see any.

John, how much time did the gal put in behind the rifle prior to taking her out hunting?

JohnBurns
I think she dry fired it 3 or 4 time before we went out and another half dozen dry fires on the elk.
..........Well that was the first and only shot she has ever fired at a big game animal.

Enough said, the guy's a boob.

Well I didn't realize that, now it is the most disgusting video I have ever seen. I have lost all respect for John Burns.

i find it rather amusing that the majority participating in this thread had enough common sense to realize that this specific "hunt" was complete BS, yet the two guys praising this turd's actions were too stubborn to admit the truth. i guess we've all been there at one point or another and i'm just glad you've FINALLY realized why so many here think it wasn't a good idea. no amateur should be attempting shots like that regardless of who's coaching them and these videos serve one purpose...ADVERTISEMENT.

call it hunting if you please, but how can you honestly call it hunting if it requires zero hunting skills and only 100% shooting skills? it's comparable to that thing a while back where you could shoot big game animals with a remotely controlled gun through your computer.

Going on a guided hunt is hunting then? Or to Africa? All you're doing is going for a walk and shooting when they tell you too. The guide/tracker do all the "hunting".

Hunting is finding the animals. Everyone is a shooter once you found them.

ah.....whats the truth? she shot it? after being coached? I have had many shooters( girls too) first time on a dialed in gun hit the steel at 600meters five out of five shots. so is baiting deer with feed plots and apples hunting? shooting a wolf or bear on a bait? I just dont see how this is not hunting?

Obviously,I don't think anyone has issues when it's done on steel or targets and it would have been prudent for Burns to have her practice on such targets before shooting at a live animal at extreme range.

okay I see that point but how many hunter fire two or three rounds at a cardboard box fifty feet away in a pit the night before deer season? Then get ready for the dogs on the heels of a running deer?

.... because hunting is, by definition, "the pursuit of game for food or sport"..... there is no pursuit here... No doubt some can make the shot (obviously).... but using elk as a substitute for a gong is not hunting.... and using an inexperienced shooter and an underweight caliber (which is likely used DUE to the inexperience of the shooter) to kill game opens up a high FAIL percentage.... and that is inhumane....

When you bait deer do you just throw apples out anywhere and sit on a stump?... no.. you scout, research, set up cams, look for sign etc.... I think if the shooter in that vid had any real interest in harvesting game they would have done some of these things and gotten something better than that cow...

Yup, equally irresponsible. I especially like the ones with a pocketfull of mismatched ammo they've collected over the years and expect it to all shoot great because it's the same caliber. :p

It was a bang flop with a .243 at 600 + yards. It was a Berger bullet that inflicted the damage. It shows that a .243 is enough for an Elk with a well placed shot. You miss your shot with a .300 mag it's the same as missing with a .243, your going to have a wounded animal on your hands. A larger caliber is no replacement for a well placed shot.

I don't no her experience but from what I saw she waited until her Elk was broadside, away from others, and sent one when she was ready. Dead Elk was the result. If I was there and new her more I could make a decision on whether she should have or shouldn't have shot. The choice of downgrading from a .300 to a .243 seems to have been the right call for her. She didn't flock shoot and get lucky, that would be unethical.

This^^^^!

Any further justification of the "hunt" on this video is retarded.

I rang in with my opinion over there. Still sad to see that a great shooter like John would pull s**t like that. Still have respect for what hes done for shooting, not so much what he's doing for hunting.

EDIT- and yes I still 100% agree this is hunting. The same as archery over bait, rifle over bait, open country spot and stalk etc is still hunting.

If you had read this thread, then you'd know that her experience was nil. She's never hunted before, and she only took a couple dry fires of the gun before sending the bullet flying.

And you Sir are a perfect example of people talking out of their A$$ without knowing all the facts.

I think I already explained I feel pretty proud of how that all worked out.

It is possible that me calling her a “girl” in the title of the thread is somewhat misleading but it made me smile.

While this might have been her first big game animal she owns her own bird dogs and hunts upland game most every weekend.

The elk was hauled out of the hills in the back of her 1 ton dually truck. She owns a string of horses (including one of the better mannered stud horse I have ever been around) and tack (including pack saddles) and regularly rides alone in the exact area in which she killed the elk. She was ready to saddle up and pack that elk out of any hole it could find.

She owns her own .300 WSM.

She works 12 hr shifts in the QC dept of a company that makes cancer medicines and only has the weekends to hunt.

I did not “let” her shoot that elk. I simply told her what the gun would do and she made the decision understanding exactly what could go wrong.

What really makes me smile is how she performed so well in a situation that has a few, just a few, of you guys stumped.

An impartial observer might draw the conclusion her stellar performance has damaged a few fragile egos. I mean if a “girl” can do it ???

So she owns a bigger rifle, drives a truck and works in a lab?.... how does that justify pulling the trigger?... I suppose all of her upland game experience prepped her for a 688 yard shot at an elk with a .243.....

And what I have to say to these "facts" is: so what? None of that makes her an experienced hunter. Her experience at big game hunting and long range shooting [before this vid was taken] remains nil, as I said, even if she does own a dually and ride horses. Shooting grouse and pheasants don't make you an authority on long range shooting.
Owning a bigger gun doesn't mean you're practiced at using it.
Owning a dually and riding horses doesn't make you a long range crack shot.

The vast majority of hunters on here know that what that video showed was in poor form, and in poor hunting ethics.
Even those who were stalwartly defending it, after more info came out, also agreed.

So what's your ties to this guy?

Maybe if she was in a loin cloth:)p) and wielding a spear it would be considered "hunting".

Maybe time to move on to a new thread for some, it seems this has really upset some folks here and to the point of causing some major mental trauma.

Please hunt the way you want, let others hunt the way they want, it seems there is no pleasing some on here.

Maybe jealousy is the issue, a girl that shoots better than you syndrome.:D
