Been leaning hard toward the .25/06 when I rebarrel my howa 1500 .30/06. Finding a good hunting barrel of at least 24" will likely be a challenge.

Gary at Big Horn Sales is the guy you need to call! He is your best friend when it comes to anything for custom work. Great selection, price and service!
Consider finding a new gunsmith. I have an old Parker Hale 25-06 & it's still a great gun. If you want to shoot coyote....I use 75 gr. hollow pt. & get 3590 fps at the muzzle, & have shot them at 400 yds. For a deer round, I like 115gr loads, & they exit the muzzle at 3078 fps. You can step it up with 120gr rounds if Moose is on the menu. Versatile? yes....Accurate? yes......Dead? NO. The Only drawback is the lack of selection in Factory ammo. For Varmint, using 65 or 75 gr ammo, you have to load them yourself, not a really bad thing. A good shooter friend tried mine for a day..........he bought one too. By the way, from a bench rest, at 200 yds., using 115 gr. rounds, shot 5 rounds, Four IN the 1 inch bullseye, & One on the edge of the Bull...........that's no bull.
So we have some .308 based cartridges, and 30'06 based cartridges in the same caliber ie:
7mm-08 & 280 Rem
.308 & 30'06
And a few other crossovers in the .338/35 range but not nearly as popular.
On the other hand....
We have 260 Rem but no real factory 6.5-06 offering which would be a sweet cartridge I think.
Opposite with the 25-06....there is no 25-08 which would also be a sweet cartridge.
I don't think a 6mm-06 would be great as the .243 can burn barrels out already....
But a factory 6.5-06 or 25-08 I would probably add to the arsenal.
Answer to your 25-08 is a 257 Roberts.
Answer to your 6.5-06 is the 6.5x55.
I can certainly see why these calibers don't exist...
25-06 is effective, however the biggest issue is the wonderful 6.5's that make the 25-06 pale in comparison. Anything the 25-06 can do, the 6.5x47, 260 Rem, 6.5x55, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5/284, and 6.5-06 can do 'mo betta
264 WM!!
The 25-06 is a great and capable cartridge. Don't listen to smiths that think the only guns alive are the 30-06 and all the WSM's lol
I think the 325wsm is pretty much a dead cartridge.
Only to those who have yet to feel the joy![]()
