25 Creedmoor Thread

Not sure why you would call a scenar trash they are an amazing bullet and have won many of long range matches

I’m just concerned that the barrel life will be to short on the 25 creedmoor
Because the BC is horrible. I didn't call the bullet trash, I called its BC trash. It has a G7 of about .264.

I have nothing against the Scenar. I'm just saying it's misleading and pointless to compare a worst-of-breed BC bullet against a best-of-breed BC bullet. Of course the better BC bullet is going to look better on a drop chart.

Run the numbers again, this time against the A-tip 135gr 6.5mm at G7 of .314 and the results will be a lot closer.

This is my take and feel free to take it or leave it. The 25 Creed running the 135's is going to be around 2900 fps give or take on an individual rifle. The 6.5 running the 140's is going to be around 2800 give or take. So basically you gain 75 to 100 fps and a slightly higher BC with the 25's Recoil will be pretty close so lets call that a wash. I assume a little less barrel life pushing the same amount of powder down a narrower tube.

They are pretty similar but the 25 does have a slight and I do mean slight ballistic advantage. For a hunter who cares, for a competitior it might mean a hit instead of a miss on a wind call. (notice i said might) Time will tell. I am just glad that we live in an era of firearms where we can experiment with cartridges easily.

Those are some high velocities for a case that size. Pressures must be high as well. I ran a 25 Souper for a while, couldn't get anywhere near those speeds with the heaviest 25 cal bullets of the day. Interesting. - dan
I will be doing some pressure series testing tomorrow (weathers is supposed to be above 0.0) and I will post some data and if I have any groups worth showing ill post those as well.

Look forward to seeing that. - dan
I had a chance to do some shooting today. Some very good results. In my rifle (your gun will be different and work up your own load from safe in a reloading manual) 41.9grs of IMR 4350 had an average speed of 2880 with an SD of 3.6 with a 5 shot group, and group size was about 1/2 MOA. This load is what I am looking for as it checks off all the boxes I need to shoot a an NRL Hunter match. I will need to veryify, by loading up a few at this charge and see if the results hold over a few groups.

Thats fair but we have the advantage of being at 3000 feet above sea level and that seems to impact things. Plus it is a 26 inch barrel.
If you watch the UItimate Reloader Video he was getting velocities very similar to the ones I was gettting.

Bullet design has come a long way in the last few years. The bearing surface on some of these new bullets is a lot less, meaning less pressure.

Even powders have come a long ways. Use the right powder its amazing what happens, RL26 is fairy dust but if you have some, its amazing what it does.

Im shocked the 1/4 bores dont get more attention these days, yes they're gaining traction but the ballistics on them out to 1000 yards are superior to the 6.5's these days. I'd like to see some more factory, fast twist 25's released. Even a 25-06 with a 7.5-8 twist would be pretty sweet.

Thought I would post the raw data and a photo.
This group had an average speed of 2878 SD of 3.03 and an ES of 8 (2874-2882).
So I had 2 powder charges with very similar results and looks like my node is 41.9 to 42.1 of IMR 4350
(please note this data applies to my rifle only and your rifle may have pressure at this charge so use caution)

I am pretty happy with that, my reloading system is working. I use Short Action Customs dies and bushings. I use a Auto Trickler V.4 to dispense powder, and I use tweezers to add and remove single kernels of powder to make sure the wieght is exactly the same too .002 of a grain. Its a bit pedantic but seems to serve me well.

This translates to a cartridge and rifle that will work very well shooting out to 1000m I am pretty excited about doing some further testing but this seems like a great starting point.

VIVA 25 Creedmoor !!!!

Here is some data on some of the 25 Cal bullets available from different Manufacturers

HORNADY
134 gr
ELD® Match
0.645 (G1)
0.325 (G7)

138 gr
A‑Tip® Match
.695 (G1)
.350 (G7)

BERGER
135 gr
Long Range Hybrid Target
0.650 (G1)
0.334 (G7)

I looked up offerings by Sierra (matchkings) and Nosler (RDF) Barnes (matchburner) and did not find anything comparable. Feel free to correct me if I am in error.

I ran my 25 creed at
How does the 25x47 velocity compare? Does it like Varget like the 6.5 version?

I ran the 25 creed at 2880 and it was good, 2920 was fantastic but heavy bolt lift and hard hard on brass.

The 25x47 has shot well with rl16, n150 and varget. I’ve gotten 2690-2940 without max pressure or heavy bolt lift. 2940 I know is hot so I wouldn’t shoot here but I didn’t exhibit the normal pressures I would normally see at max. There was nodes in all 3 powders at 2770-2790 range with 2780 a very happy spot. Another one in the low to mid 2825-2850 range and then a higher one in that 2870-2890 range it looked but I didn’t further experiment at that speed.

Great shooting, beautiful rifles, great thread BTW !
I've never used any Vihtavuori powders before, seems they have a great following. Right off the top of any of your noggins, are there any Vit powders that are really close to RL 17 and RL 19's performance wise ? Thanks in advance

N550 is pretty close to RL17 in burn rate. I don't have a chart with RL26 handy to see where it slots, sorry. - dan

If a 6.5cm gets 2800fps with a 140gr bullet, I have troubles believing 5gr less bullet weight in a smaller diameter bore is going to get 100fps more at the same pressures?

That article posted by adamg lists these velocities:
Bullet25 GT25×47 Lapua25 Creedmoor
Berger 135 gr LRHT2,719 fps (5)2,721 fps (11)2,835 fps (10)

Sounds like an interesting cartridge if you like the quarter bore though. If it out-performs the 6.5CM whats not to like? lol
