270 vs 30-06

Here - how bout i just piss everyone off at once:

i used to use 22 lr for moose, but i'm thinking of switching to .17's in a lever gun because i like the flatter trajectory for those 700 yard head shots. Am i doing the right thing, or should i be moving to buckshot?

Good one..

That;s tough to beat.

Foxer, you're nuts, don't do it. You're totally right about the flatter trajectory, if you're hunting moose in Alberta maybe, in BC that's probably irrelevant though.

Mainly, have you seen the price of .17 vs .22LR? Total ripoff! Just keep practicing on the moose with those 22s and you'll get it right eventually. If you're worried about the trajectory just go for bigger animals, they're easier to hit at range.

Buckshot is even more expensive, your choice, maybe you're made of money! I don't know...

I thought I may try a sling shot this year I heard they were more powerful then my .177 pellet gun and I've had really good luck with that on elk. I don't think I'd take out for moose though their skin is a little to thick
But barring that I'd probably stick to my 300 Wby for squirrels and my 12gauge for grasshoppers.

Foxer, ignore this advice.

Mr. Green, I don't care HOW many elk you've taken with your .177. That's totally irresponsable and violates every princeple of hunting and respect for the game. I ask you, How many of those shots were just lucky? How many elk did you hit that DIDN'T die right away, only to bleed out in agony later? Air rifles have no place in elk or moose hunting, period. Maybe if you were a skilled native hunter, on barren caibou, but you're not so piss off.

You should be banned.

Hmm, say now. How does the 300WBY do on the squirrils? Nice!! :)

Oh dear.

It would appear that persons known and unknown have taken it upon themselves to make frivolous comments about a matter of great import to the hunting and shooting community.

For shame, gentlemen, for shame!

And may I say that I should wish to congratulate the erudite gentleman (showing his good breeding, may it be so lauded) who remarked that the .280 was the much preferable cartridge to these two plebeian offerings that the great louts of this world debate!

PS) Harrummmpppphhhhhh!

Good Christ man my hopes are gone. Such hope. Such promise. But alas the new forum has digressed to a x vs. y thread in no time flat. Hopes dashed indeed.

And to start it over the venerable 30-06 and the pubescent 270 is just beyond belief     And what's this? Foxer is our moderator :p

Did I tell you guys about the boone and crocket squirrel I got last year :?

It is SO VERY REFRESHING to hear a real hunter chime in on this nonsense. Salty, how very good of you to point out to these rabble-rousers the error of their ways!

So tell me, dear chap, what about this B&C squirrel? Was he attacking you at the time? Did you use a double rifle? Details, man, we need to hear the details!

Doug

Then Foxer may tell the story of the Booner chicken he bravely defended himself against and brought to bag with a sawed off shottie

T'wernt no wussy chicken - T'were a goose, and I'm pretty sure it had a knife.

I had to defend yself froma group charge of grouse..I managed to nail each of them in the CNS with my 300WSM...

 one of my fave stories, almost as good as the bear when only holding birdshot one.

Well we should get back on track here I guess. As everyone knows the 30-06 IS the best caliber out there to take all NA game. Except for those B&C Squirrels and armed geese and grouse. For those everyone knows you need at least a .416 Rigby

Well, if I must...

This was last year and actually I was prospecting up the Wannaganish valley near Mudslide. I had recently recieved my permit to pack and felt quite at ease even with all the fresh bear sign, with my 45 colt in the cross draw holster.

I came out of a steep draw and crested a rocky ridge and there he was. Squirrelzilla. Man this puppy was light years bigger than any western red I've ever seen. Now I'll admit I didn't have my squirrel tag, and I did take this up with the game warden. But this was self defence, pure and simple.

He launched out of a tree, lit on the ground and squeeled at me in a stance like a centre line backer. I could see right through his eyes, they were red like Lucifer himself. He was ready to attack.

I drew my six shooter and centred the sights on the brute and squeezed off a round. The 300gr slug struck him centre of mass. He was about 20 yards away, and reared at the impact, squeeled like the demon he was and was down for good. Skull scored 3 and a quarter.
